Richard Pimentel On How You Can Live The Life You Never Imagined

Many of us might think about the word responsibility with exhaust. After all, adulthood is made up of constant responsibilities that constantly pile up on top of one another.

Obligation after obligation, we attend to our responsibilities because we feel that we have no other choice.

But have you ever really looked that the word? Responsibility is the main subject of this talk by Richard Pimentel. In his video, he explains that, while serving in Vietnam, a sergeant told him that responsibility is made up of two words: response and ability. As they sat on a hillside and faced losing at least five members to enemy soldiers, Pimentel's sergeant spoke these words:

"'Responsibility isn’t what someone puts on you. Responsibility isn’t your job description. Responsibility isn’t a paper you sign. We all find ourselves looking at situations and we all find ourselves with abilities and what we have to ask is, given my abilities, what then will be my response to those abilities?'"

What if you looked at your responsibilities in this light? Are they something you have to do or something you can do? If you have the ability to do something, what will your response be? Will you turn a blind eye or face things head-on?

Richard Pimentel defines a real leader in his talk by saying a true leader does not get people to believe in them but rather teaches people how to believe in themselves. You are capable of far more than you realize, so how will you use them?
