According to The Hindu, Minu Pauline, the restaurant's owner, struggled with this food waste problem. One day, she saw a homeless woman eating from the garbage and realized she had a second problem. Such hungry people were a part of her community, and their hunger was also her problem.

After some thought, Pauline realized that she could solve both her problems with a straightforward solution; She would leave the excess food outside for anyone to take. Homeless and other hungry individuals could grab a meal without any questioning.

Since the restaurant serves food throughout the day, there are extra portions created all day. To ensure the food was safe to eat, Pauline invested in a refrigerator to store the food. Since it had a glass door, everyone could see what was in this community refrigerator.

Pauline named the refrigerator, "Nanma Maram," which means "Tree of Goodness." Since its launch, the restaurant has served between 70 and over 100 portions of food per day. Customers are also encouraged to bring food to the refrigerator with the date written on the wrapper to ensure freshness.

Such a creative solution can inspire you to use your resources to serve the community. What is your favorite element of Pauline's innovative program? Perhaps you've had the privilege of helping the homeless where you live. Let us know in the comments and make sure you pass this along to your friends and family!
