Residents Of Kensington Palace: Revealing Prince William & Kate Middleton's Royal Neighbors
Jul 28, 2021 by apost team
Kensington Palace is home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their beautiful family. The palace is filled with beautiful rooms, gardens, and plenty of other amenities fit for a royal family. Prince William and Kate Middleton are the most notable people who live on the grounds and have maintained their residency for quite some time as they raise their three adorable children there together. The happy couple is also surrounded by plenty of royal neighbors.
Located in the heart of London near the grassy hills of Hyde Park, Kensington Palace sits and is the residence of plenty of royals. With such a central location, the palace is extremely close to many historical sites, including Big Ben and St. Paul’s Cathedral, as well as being surrounded by plenty of greenery. Kensington Palace is full of history that dates back to the 17th century and really flourished following the arrival of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Nowadays, William and Kate are the most famous residents to currently reside at the palace.
While the palace is generally open to the public and serves as a museum, it also serves as a large place of residency for many royals who reside in apartments above the palace as well as houses within the grounds. The word “apartment” does not pay enough justice to these abodes, as they are filled with lavish furnishings and have more than enough space for the families living there. With so much history, amenities, and gorgeous furnishings, it’s no wonder that so many royals choose to live at Kensington Palace.
Inside The Cambridge Family’s Home
As of July 2021, there are 50 residents currently living at Kensington Palace in either one of the apartments above the palace or in one of the houses within the grounds, as per Woman and Home. Many of those living at the location are members of the royal family, but many military members, courtiers, and staff also live on the famous grounds. There are even a few regular citizens who pay rent to live at the palace, according to Woman and Home.
William and Kate currently live in Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. The couple first moved to the location in 2013 but moved out for a short while after Prince George was born. They later returned and have been living there ever since. Since George and Princess Charlotte go to school in London, and the parents have royal responsibilities to carry out, the family seems to have permanently settled into their royal residence.
Despite the simple name, the apartment is actually a massive 20-room, four-story apartment. According to British royal expert Christopher Warwick, the resident locations of Kensington Palace should be thought of as “being these wonderful red brick terrace houses because they are all joined, but separate houses,” as per the Daily Mail. Apartment 1A is quite large, as Warwick explained that its 20 rooms stretch from “the basement to the attic,” which is more than accommodating for the family of five. “It’s enormous… and it’s like a piece of countryside in London,” royal author Ingrid Seward said.

Their Royal Neighbors
As if Apartment 1A wasn’t already glorious enough, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent an estimated $6 million of taxpayers’ money to renovate the property, according to the Daily Mail. Woman and Home reported that the couple spent an additional large chunk of change out of their own pockets to pay for even more add-ons, including a second family kitchen.
While William and Kate are two of the most well-known tenants of Kensington Palace, their royal neighbors also have the luxury of living in such a historical and beautiful place. Woman and Home reported that Prince and Princess Michael of Kent currently reside in Apartment 10, although they had a few financial issues when they first moved into the estate in 2002. Prince Edward and his wife Katharine live together at the Wren House. According to Woman and Home, the Duke of Kent is Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin and serves as the president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
In 2020, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank moved into the palace’s Ivy Cottage, marking the first time the pair had lived together during their seven-year relationship, as per Woman and Home. Eugenie is one of William and Prince Harry’s cousins and has her eye currently set on moving out of Ivy Cottage and instead into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
Since Kensington Palace is a royal estate and many of the family members enjoy their privacy, there are not many pictures that showcase just how beautiful it is on the inside. However, the public has been granted a few glimpses here and there over the years, revealing the lavish yet cozy rooms full of neutral-colored furniture and warm furnishings, as per Woman and Home.
