From the ashes of destructive California, wildfires come stories of hope and human kindness.
No story is more indicative of the heartwarming aspects of the devastating Carr fire than the story of Vulcan the cat. As the fire was blazing a path through Shasta and Trinity Counties last summer, dispatchers received a call about a trapped kitten. Animal Regulation Officer Dan Evans was the first on the scene, not sure what kind of tragedy he would walk into.

What he found was the abandoned kitten acting frightened and skittish and suffering from a host of burns all over his body. Evans considers it a miracle that the cat was still alive after what he had been through.
Evans found Vulcan in a burned vehicle. Because of the precarious situation, Evans had to carefully extract the scared cat in a way that did not cause further damage to the burned skin.
Vulcan recognized the act of kindness and began nuzzling into the palm of Evans' hand. The officer said he knew right then that Vulcan would become a part of his family. Vulcan was immediately treated at the Haven Humane Society for various third-degree burns on his fur and on his paws. Although veterinarians held out hope that Vulcan would make it through, they cautioned Evans that he might not survive the damage.
Evans and his family held vigil over Vulcan's recovery, cheering him on every step of the way. Eventually, the cat was released to Evans and his wife and his new forever home. Vulcan immediately bonded with the couple's three-legged rescue dog, Cali, becoming fast friends.
