Queen Camilla Modernizes Royal Family By Breaking Protocol Next To King Charles

King Charles and Queen Camilla completed their royal tour of Australia and Samoa in October 2024. During the tour, the king and queen interacted with many fans of the royal family, and one thing stood out from these meet-ups: it seems as though the royal family is slowly modernizing. 

The royal family is known for its strict rules and protocols, which have kept it intact for centuries. One of these strict rules includes the royal family not being known to take selfies with the public. While there is no obligatory code when it comes to greeting members of the royal family, apart from just politely addressing them formally, many members of the public tend to stick to traditional, formal norms when they encounter the royals. 

Many had the pleasure of meeting Queen Camilla during the royal tour of Australia and Samoa. Like many of the royal tours, the queen’s visit was marked by unforgettable fashion statements and the very best of what the monarchy’s jewels have to offer. One of the couple’s notable stops during the tour was their visit to St. Thomas's Anglican Church in Sydney, Australia. The couple signed the country’s first official Bible as well as the book of prayers.

After the royal engagement, the queen took some time to greet eager royal fans and even rewarded one with a rare selfie moment. Camilla, 77, was spotted breaking royal protocol by posing for the selfie. Queen Elizabeth was particularly known for her dislike of smartphones, and not many other royals have been known to pose for selfies with the public. 

While there is no written rule against members of the royal family taking photos with the public, the norm is a simple greeting and short conversation. According to CNN Royal Commentator Victoria Arbiter:

"Royals would always rather have a personal interaction than have people clamoring for selfies."

This would explain most of the royal family’s interactions with members of the public during their engagements. It also makes it extra special that Queen Camilla agreed to take a selfie during a royal tour. Reporting on the impromptu selfie and its impact, the Express said:

"While there is no royal rule regarding selfies, it is generally discouraged for members of the Royal Family to pose for selfies."

This norm is partly due to security concerns and the possibility of what dangers could present themselves as a result of physical closeness to strangers. There is also the issue of maintaining as much order as possible in such a setting, as other people might rush to the scene. Victoria Arbiter discussed this further in her analysis:

"If you grant one, then it quickly becomes overwhelming."

Royals don’t always stick to the same rules and do sometimes make exceptions, such as when it comes to granting picture requests from sick children during hospital visits or the very old. However, Queen Camilla did this in an entirely unique and unexpected setting, proving that perhaps the royal family is easing its tight stance on selfies with the public.

Prince William also agreed to take a selfie with a fan during a royal engagement earlier this year. He and his children also took a selfie with Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, during the London leg of her Eras tour.

It really is a breath of fresh air to see a positive shift in royal etiquette.
