Popular actor Scott Bakula starred in a number of TV shows that made him a household name. His first TV hit, the time travel series “Quantum Leap,” gave birth to the character of Dr. Sam Beckett, who endeared him to viewers. The audience loved his character so much that Bakula was nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globes for every year that the show was on.
“Quantum Leap” became a huge rating success for five seasons between 1989 to 1993 and was voted as one of the Top Cult TV Shows to ever grace television alongside “The X-Files,” “The Twilight Zone” and “Star Trek.” Incidentally, Bakula was also part of the “Star Trek” franchise, having led “Star Trek: Enterprise” for two seasons as Capt. Jonathan Archer.
Born in Missouri in 1954, Bakula moved to New York in his early ’20s to be on the Broadway stage. He caught the eyes of TV producers in Los Angeles and his then first-wife Krista Neumann. Bakula moved to Hollywood with her and they raised two kids, Chelsey and Cody, after they got married. He also starred in a few short-lived series until his biggest break with “Quantum Leap.”
After his hit show folded, Bakula was also cast as the love interest of Candice Bergen in “Murphy Brown” and experienced a career-high, but his marriage to Neumann was sadly not working anymore. They divorced in 1995.
Bakula’s next big TV role came with the spin-off series “NCIS: New Orleans” in 2014 and made Special Agent Dwyane King Pride another fan favorite. By then, he was married to his second wife and long-time partner, Chelsea Field.
Bakula and Field were already together after his success with “Quantum Leap” and they welcomed a son, Wil, after his divorce from Neumann. In 1999, the couple then had their second child, Owen, but did not officially tie the knot until 2009.
Bakula admitted in a 2015 interview with People that his first marriage failed partly because he didn’t make time for family, and he struggled with working out his feelings in his relationship with Neumann. Learning from this experience, Bakula then vowed to be a more present husband to Field and father to their children. His contracts for his TV shows specifically include a clause that he has to be home with his family by dinner time.
“Chelsea is amazingly present and has taught me a lot about relationships and spirituality. I feel incredibly lucky to have the career and family I do.”
It helps as well that his wife is an actress and was also part of “NCIS: New Orleans” as Rita Devereaux, his character’s love interest. This meant that Bakula and Field could share work experiences together.
The actor also said in a 2016 interview with CBS that he prefers to keep his personal life private and hardly invites the showbiz press to his house. Being TV famous has its downfalls and Bakula wanted to draw the line to protect his private life.
However, fans of the actor can still get a glimpse of his life via his wife’s Instagram, where she has shared photos of their first grandchild. Bakula became a grandfather at 68 years old when his eldest daughter gave birth in 2021.
