Earlier in 2020, Bean, a black Labrador and pitbull mix, was taken in by a man from New Hampshire who wanted to find out the reason behind why he kept being returned to the shelter by fosters. This video from July 2020 shows the sweet journey that Bean, the puppy, took to find his forever home with John Handem Piette, an editor at The Dodo.

As a recent video by The Dodo has shown that working at the company looks like a whole lot of fun! They often have dogs brought to the office, and employees foster them from time to time before the dogs find a forever home. The company, after all, specializes in telling animals' stories and spreading awareness for animal rights issues.

This is the story about how a black Labrador and pit bull mix named Bean (formerly called “Abe”) found his forever home after being returned from old adoptees not just once, but twice.

“A lot of puppies go through our office,” says John Handem Piette, an editor at the media brand, explaining why he had not noticed Abe at first.

John shares that one of his coworkers had been fostering Abe but the puppy just could not seem to get adopted. “When Abe was returned we all felt bad for him,” John lamented. “We all thought he’d found his forever home but for some reason, it just didn’t work out.” But it was not all sad -- the office dogs were happy to have Abe back in their company!

Abe showed great intelligence around the office. In the video, when he was asked to sit, his response seemed almost lightning speed. Though this should not be all that shocking, being part Labrador. According to The Smart Canine, Labradors are ranked 7th for smartest dog breed out of 138 breeds.

John started really noticing Abe when he was returned the first time, crediting that to the dog’s literal puppy eyes: “After Abe was returned, that’s when I really noticed him. There was something about his eyes.” Curious, John asked his coworker, Jordan, about the puppy’s story. Jordan explained to John that Abe and his sister, Addie, had been rescued from Puerto Rico. But unlike her brother, she had been adopted already.

A few weeks passed, and they finally found another home for Abe. The Dodo office even threw him a goodbye party. John thought that Abe was finally going to be happy with his new family.

“On the way to the office that Monday, I saw a post from Jordan,” John said. “Abe had been returned again!” This was when John made the decision that would--unbeknownst to him--change his life forever.

“‘Whatever reason that he keeps getting returned… I’m going to find out,’’” he told Jordan. “And I brought him home.” When John brought the puppy home, he and his girlfriend decided to rename him “Bean,” after the late Kobe Bryant’s middle name.

“I knew he had been through a lot. I just wanted him to know that until we found him a forever home, he wasn’t going anywhere. Whatever issues he had, I was going to work through them with him,” John said, determined.

And it did not take long at all for John to figure out exactly how much work Bean was going to be. From wrecked shoes to ruined cushions and murdered stuffed animals, you wouldn’t know if it was a tornado that flew around John’s apartment or if it was just Bean and his endless energy. “There’s no end to the devastation this puppy can cause,” John said of his new foster pup.

Just when Bean was getting comfortable in his new Brooklyn home, Covid hit. And so they had to leave town. Together, they drove up to New Hampshire together to John’s parents’ house.

“New Hampshire was a whole other adventure for Bean,” John enthused. “He got to see snow for the first time. His first swim.”

But their favorite thing? Running! John said that running is something both he and Bean love doing, and so they do it together. Something Bean doesn’t love? The family cats. Well, not at first anyway. Bean and the cats, Tigger and Simba, would chase each other around the house and in the backyard. But they eventually accepted one another, with John describing them to be “pretty much inseparable.”

“Bean’s made life an absolute joy for all of us. And he’s definitely found his forever family,” John said, giving his mom as an example. She has been recovering from breast cancer for the past year and Bean’s really helped lift her spirits and helped with the healing process.

“Bean’s taught us all so much already. That even when times are tough and things don’t work out the first time, or the second time, that eventually things work out. And I’m so glad we chose each other.”
