Princess Diana Was Too Young To Know If She Really Loved Charles

Everyone remembers the break-up of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1992, followed by their divorce in 1996. What most people don't seem to realize is that their marriage was doomed from the beginning.

There were two glaring problems: Diana was only 19 and somewhat star-struck when Charles, 32, proposed to her. At that young age, most people have no idea what it really means to be in love, which Diana's biographer Sarah Bradford mentioned in a 2017 BBC series "Images of Diana." In fact, the marriages most likely to fail are those in which the wife is 25 or younger at the time of the wedding.

The second problem is that Charles was in love with Camilla Parker-Bowles even before he married Diana. During the couples' engagement interview in 1981, it was quite clear there was a problem when after being asked if they were in love, instead of both responding with an enthusiastic Yes, they said:

"Diana looked away rather sheepishly and said: 'Of course!' Charles said: 'Whatever ‘in love’ means.'"

Diana mentioned the problem of Charles' relationship with Camilla in an interview with Panorama in 1995. She referred to the fact that there were three people involved in her marriage and said: "it was a bit crowded." Diana also mentioned that she once overheard Charles talking to Camilla on the phone and was shocked to hear Charles tell her he would always love her. Quite a different response than his answer to whether he loved Diana during their engagement interview.

Writer Petronella Wyatt developed a relationship with Diana in the years leading up to Diana's death and said she thought Diana had always been a little in love with Charles. Wyatt also said she didn't think Diana was actually in love with Dodi Fayed, she says in the IB Times, the man she was dating at the time of her death. Fayed was killed in the crash that killed Diana.
