The Princess of Wales is a strong supporter of outdoor activities and the therapeutic effects of nature. She has also often spoken about practices like “forest bathing.” In March 2025, Princess Catherine, 43, joined a group of young Scouts in the United Kingdom’s Lake District, a visit aligned with her role as joint president of the Scout Association. This visit was highlighted in a video released to YouTube by Kensington Palace on Apr. 14, 2025.

This deep connection to the outdoors took on even greater significance during Catherine’s battle with cancer in 2024. In her first public update following the announcement of her diagnosis, she was photographed leaning against a tree in Windsor. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told PEOPLE of the image, “There she is in nature, which has fortified her, and looking upward in a sign of real hope and encouragement for everybody.”

In early April 2025, the Princess honored nature on the UK’s Mothering Sunday with a heartfelt video featuring outdoor imagery. The caption on her Instagram post read: “Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary. This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognize how our bond with the natural world can help not only nurture our inner selves but remind us too of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life.” The post was signed with a personal “C” for Catherine.

Princess Catherine’s appreciation for the outdoors extends to her children as well. In a 2020 appearance on the “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast, she shared that she feels happiest “when I’m with my family outside in the countryside, and we’re all filthy dirty.” With Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis on school break in April 2025, the royal family has time to enjoy quality time outdoors together.

In April 2025, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, revisited the Lake District, a location she holds close from childhood holidays spent exploring the rugged landscape. During a previous trip to the region with Prince William in June 2019, Catherine fondly recalled enjoying “boulder hopping” in the streams. She also shared that her children – Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 – are enthusiastic about the area and enjoy “walking in the fells.”

In a video released in tandem with her visit, the Princess was seen conversing with Chief Scout Dwayne Fields. Reflecting on her deep connection to the outdoors, she said:

“I find it a very spiritual and very intense emotional reconnection I suppose, these environments. ... Not everyone has that same relationship perhaps with nature, but it is so therefore meaningful for me as a place to balance and find a sort of sense of peace and reconnection in what is otherwise a very busy world.”

Fields emphasized the transformative power of nature for youth, saying:

“I think it’s really important for young people to have access to nature because it’s a space where they can push themselves... build up a generation who is passionate about our natural spaces and passionate about protecting them as well.”

Following a walk near Lake Windermere, Princess Catherine joined Scouts aged 10 to 15 from Cumbria and Greater Manchester as they worked on earning their Naturalist Badge. Greeting them warmly, she said, “Hello, everyone! How are you all doing? Good?” and was seen crouching to examine a map. She praised the Scout movement’s enduring impact:

“What’s so fantastic about Scouts is it’s the same foundations that have always been there... it still resonates with so many young people.”

She also highlighted that the lessons Scouts learn are “life skills” relevant throughout all stages of life.
