After being absent since 2023, the Princess of Wales returned to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Wellington Barracks with a bright smile. Upon her arrival, she was warmly welcomed by Major General Sir Chris Ghika and Lt Col Ben Irwin-Clark. This 2025 celebration was significant as it marked the regiment’s 125th anniversary.
Catherine chose a striking bottle green Alexander McQueen coat for the occasion, accompanied by a matching beret-style hat. She completed her elegant look with Kiki McDonough earrings featuring green tourmaline, green amethyst, and diamonds. Catherine presented long service and good conduct medals during the ceremony to Colour Sergeant Healy, Sgt Ben Beavis, and Sgt Kristian Pooley.
Additionally, she awarded the Operation Shader medal to Sgt Jamie Davies before stepping onto the Parade Ground. After taking the salute from the dais, she distributed shamrocks to officers and guardsmen, a custom that dates back to Queen Alexandra in the early 1900s. Finally, she offered a sprig to the regimental mascot, Seamus, an Irish wolfhound.
The Princess was presented with her own sprig of shamrock by an officer. Following the parade, Catherine met junior cadets from Northern Ireland, known as Mini Micks, before heading to the Sergeants’ Mess, where she mingled with Irish guardsmen and their families. In the more casual setting, she opened up about her children, saying she wanted to take them to Australia and New Zealand.
She told Corporal Adam Hamilton, an Australian reservist: “George finds it fascinating that he has been to Australia and New Zealand.”
She elaborated: “I would like to go back there with them now. It’s finding time to do that. But I love to travel – yes, it’s a long flight. But I love the Middle East because that’s familiar to me (from) growing up.”

Catherine continued sharing more plans for her family’s future with the service members, pointing out:
“There are so many opportunities now to travel, I think it’s brilliant to experience it.”
Discussing her official duties abroad, she explained:
“We tend to go further afield when it’s official visits, it’s being able to carve out time to experience these countries in a more private capacity. Because otherwise you end up seeing lots of insides of amazing buildings but you don’t get to meet that many people.”
When asked about her family’s home, the Princess shared that she and her family were “in Windsor at the moment,” adding, “We were in London but moved there for more green space. It’s close enough to London, not too far away.”
Later, in the bar, she discussed Prince William’s beard with section commanders, saying:
“These trends come and go. I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for.”
Speaking to Noah Hogan, son of Company Sergeant Major John Hogan, she asked: “Do you like the idea of being in the Army too?”
She then spoke to his brother, noting: “You’re the same age as George. So you haven’t got exams this year?”
After learning that he had just joined the Army cadets, she enthusiastically said:
“You get to try so many different things there. Within the military, there are so many career different paths you can take. It’s so exciting. Actually, it’s one of the things that I’m very keen to support, that recruitment side.”
The Princess also took part in a traditional toast, sipping from a half-pint of Guinness as Guardsman Barry Loughlin honored her as a royal colonel in the dining room. Barry later praised the Princess:
“She just wanted to find out how everything’s going. She’s really nice in that respect, she doesn’t just disappear. She’s warm and you feel welcomed by her.”
The Princess received a bouquet and posed for a group photo with the officers and sergeants before departing. She also spoke with families of soldiers currently stationed overseas, including those involved in training Ukrainian troops as part of Operation Interflex.
