The Princess of Wales has significantly influenced the British fashion industry in ways fans might not fully realize. Princess Catherine, also known as Kate Middleton, has been a fashion icon for over a decade, and with many iconic looks from casual to formal, it’s no surprise why.
As a wife, mother, and working royal, Catherine embodies a sense of fashion that is accessible yet unique, modest, and elegant. There have been several occasions when Catherine has stepped out in an outfit, and either the same garment or an equivalent dupe has sold out online within moments. After multiple dresses were suddenly sold out after Princess Catherine was seen wearing them, the phenomenon even got its own name, dubbed the “Kate effect.”
Unsurprisingly, the Princess passed down her impeccable taste to her daughter, and Princess Charlotte is always spotted wearing the most stylish outfits. Charlotte always puts her best foot forward, from adorable babydoll dresses to chic pea coats.
Fashion designer Rachel Riley, whose garments the young Princess has worn before, has even gone so far as to label her a future “style icon,” and honestly, we’re not surprised at all! Let’s look back at one event in which Princess Catherine and Princess Charlotte served us one of the most iconic moments in fashion by bringing back this dated trend!
The Princess of Wales hosted her fourth “Together at Christmas” carol service at Westminster Abbey on Dec. 6, 2024. Airing on Dec. 24, the event, supported by The Royal Foundation, provided a chance to reflect on the importance of love, empathy, and our collective need for each other during life’s most challenging times.
Princess Catherine captivated the audience in a striking red coat by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, featuring a double-breasted design and structured buttons. She personalized the look with a large black bow at the nape of her neck, enhancing the coat’s elegance and making a bold fashion statement.
The year 2018 was the last time Catherine was seen in public wearing a bow. This happened during a visit to University College London, where she sported a Paule Ka skirt suit and a sleek ponytail adorned with a lovely black velvet ribbon from J.Crew.
Fast-forward to the 2024 event, and Catherine’s daughter Princess Charlotte looked adorable in a burgundy coat dress from Trotters, complete with a velvet collar and buttons, paired with shiny “Angelica” shoes from Papouelli. The Princess also mirrored her mother’s style by wearing a large black bow in her hair.
Once seen as old-fashioned, bows are now a trending accessory in modern fashion. Today, they’re everywhere – gracing hairstyles, bags and accessories – proving their enduring appeal in contemporary fashion.
As Princess Charlotte is Catherine’s only daughter, it’s no surprise to find some similarities between her and her mother’s styles. Not only does Charlotte emulate Catherine’s style — which, to be honest, we would too! — but the young girl also resembles her mother in many ways.
For instance, the way Princess Charlotte poses for pictures and her general positive and gracious demeanor are all reminiscent of her mother. There’s undoubtedly some influence from her father, Prince William’s side of the family, too. After all, she resembles her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, a lot, but it’s clear that Charlotte is quite her mother’s daughter.
