Prince Philip's Funeral — Emotional Photos Document Day The Queen And A Nation Mourned Together

On Friday, April 9, 2021, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, passed away at the age of 99 years old. Philip's passing ends his reign as the longest-serving royal spouse, having served alongside Queen Elizabeth II for 65 years and having been married to the monarch for 73 years in total.

Philip's funeral on April 17, 2021, was a quiet affair with only 30 people in attendance due to the coronavirus restrictions. The guestlist of 30 people only comprised of the closest royal family members, including Philip and Elizabeth's four children. 

These emotional photographs show the influence Philip had over not just his family but also his nation. He will be remembered for decades to come.

Prince Harry sits in the pews along with his family. His wife, Meghan Markle, could not join him due to being heavily pregnant. Harry and Meghan married in St. George's Chapel in 2018. Many royal weddings and funerals have taken place at the chapel through the years.

The Military Band plays music before the arrival of the coffin. Philip had deep ties to the Military and Royal Navy throughout his life, and served with distinction in the Second World War. 

As per the Duke of Edinburgh's long-held wishes, a custom-made Land Rover hearse carried his coffin. The modified hearse was designed by Philip himself and was 18 years in the making. It carried him from Windsor Castle to St George's Chapel. 

During the procession from Windsor Castle to St. George's Chapel, Harry and William walked with their cousin Peter Phillips between them.

Princess Anne also took part in the procession and walked beside her brother Charles. She was the only woman to be part in the walk from Windsor Castle to St. George's. 

Harry flew down to the UK from the US, where he currently resides, two days after his grandfather's passing.

The coffin was brought into the chapel, which has been a site for many royal events for over a century. 

The socially-distanced service only consisted of 30 people due to the ongoing pandemic.

Generally, a man of Philips's stature would have received a state funeral with a minimum of 800 people in attendance, but that could not happen due to the ongoing pandemic. The safety of the funeral guests, many of older age themselves, had to be kept in mind. The guestlist of 30 people only comprised of the closest royal family members.

Though members of the public were urged to remain inside and not gather for the funeral for their own safety, many ardent supporters of the Royal Family came out to say goodbye to the man who devoted his entire life to the country, the crown, and most importantly, his wife. 

The Duke of Edinburgh was an active and dedicated member of the Royal family ever since Queen Elizabeth's crowning. His singular and incredible life will continue to be remembered and celebrated by the world for years to come.
