Prince Louis, the youngest child of Prince William and Princess Catherine, has been capturing hearts since his arrival in 2018. On Apr. 23, 2025, Louis turned 7, and Kensington Palace celebrated his day by releasing a special new picture and heartwarming video of the young royal.

Born at St. Mary’s Hospital in London – the same hospital where his father was born – Louis made his debut into the world at 11 am on Apr. 23, 2018, weighing 8 pounds, 7 ounces. Though he’s the youngest of the Wales siblings, Louis holds a unique place in royal history. As he grows, the spirited young royal with his vibrant personality and charm often draws more attention than his elder siblings.

Not only is Louis a darling little boy, but he is also one of the world’s favorite royal family members, as his cheeky personality has come out in full force in the last couple of years.

A newly released photograph of Prince Louis, shared across social media, captures the young royal flashing a charming gap-toothed smile. Taken in early April 2025 in Norfolk, the image sets the school-age prince against a serene woodland backdrop. The photo was shot by Josh Shinner, a photographer familiar with the royal family, who also captured Prince William and Catherine’s 2023 Christmas card.

To celebrate the young prince’s big day, let’s take a look at how he looks now and take a stroll down memory lane to reflect on some of this fan-favorite royal’s most endearing public moments.

The youngest of three children holds a special place in the royal family – not just for his personality but also for his place in history. Prince Louis stands fourth in line to the British throne, following his father, Prince William, and older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. What sets Louis apart is that he became the first male heir who would not overtake an older sister in the succession order due to updated royal laws.

Royal watchers are buzzing with theories about Louis’ future role and titles. One such possibility is the title Duke of Edinburgh. Though it is currently held by Prince Edward – honoring the wishes of the late Prince Philip – it is only a lifetime title and will not pass to Edward’s children. Once the title reverts to the crown, insiders speculate that Louis might be next in line for the honor.

As Louis grows, the public has witnessed his milestones through a steady stream of charming photographs, often taken by his mother, Princess Catherine. For his fourth birthday in 2022, adorable beachside photos were shared, capturing the spirited energy of a little boy growing up before the world’s eyes.

Still, candid moments often reveal more than posed portraits. During the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, Louis delighted the nation with his mischievous behavior at the Trooping the Colour. He waved to the crowd, pulled playful faces, and during the RAF flypast, put his hands over his ears and appeared to let out a yell. Although the event honored the late Queen Elizabeth II, he stole the show that day. Unsurprisingly, the internet quickly expressed its adoration – but Louis was just getting started.

On Jun. 6, 2022, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant was underway, with the royal family and prominent guests like then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson seated for prime views. Among them was Mike Tindall, Prince Louis’s relative, who playfully signaled that he’d be keeping an eye on the young royal, perhaps anticipating another round of amusing behavior.

Sure enough, Prince Louis stole the spotlight with his animated expressions. His emotions ranged from boredom to playful defiance, particularly during a moment with his mother, Princess Catherine, when he grabbed her chin and briefly covered her mouth. Later, he shared a tender moment sitting on his grandfather King Charles III’s lap. At the King’s coronation, Louis, then 5, mostly behaved but couldn’t resist making silly faces, reinforcing his nickname: the “Prince of Faces.”

In early 2024, the royal family was hit with difficult news. Both King Charles and Princess Catherine were diagnosed with cancer. While details remained private at that time, they stepped back from public duties to focus on recovery. King Charles’ diagnosis was announced first, followed by Catherine’s weeks later. By 2025, King Charles resumed royal duties, and Catherine announced she was in remission, returning gradually to public life. Her return to royal duties was marked by a heartfelt visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital, where she had previously received care.

In March 2024, shortly before Catherine’s diagnosis became public, a heavily edited photo of her with the children was released by Kensington Palace. The image received major backlash. Ahead of Prince Louis’s 6th birthday, a Times source noted that while no “firm decision” had been made about hiring a professional photographer for the occasion, “They (Catherine and William) appreciate the public’s love and affection for their children and know there is a public appetite to see them on their birthdays.”

Ultimately, the couple chose to mark the day by releasing a new photograph of Prince Louis, delighting royal fans. In April 2024, the royal family shared a new portrait taken by Princess Catherine, showing Louis smiling on a picnic blanket at Adelaide Cottage – an effort to restore trust after the photo-editing controversy.

In June 2024, Louis appeared during the Trooping the Colour ceremony, joining his family on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The event also marked Princess Catherine’s first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis. Prince Louis charmed the public again in December 2024 during the “Together at Christmas” carol service at Westminster Abbey. When he appeared a bit overwhelmed, Prince William gently comforted him, showing their close bond.

Outside public events, Louis has taken up drumming – a noisy hobby that, according to Prince William, often calls for ear protection. Louis has had fewer public appearances than his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who attended events like Euro 2024 and Wimbledon.

To celebrate Prince Louis’s 7th birthday, Prince William and Princess Catherine upheld their cherished tradition of sharing a new birthday portrait – this time accompanied by an adorable video. As with their older children, the couple marked the occasion with a glimpse into their son’s world.

The portrait highlights Louis’s joyful spirit, while the video adds a playful, candid touch that has quickly won over royal fans. The release not only celebrates a personal milestone but also offers a heartwarming, relatable look at the youngest Wales sibling, continuing to charm the public and reflect the warmth of the modern royal family.
