Prince Harry Points Finger At Royal Family Member Who Conspired With ‘The Devil’ To His & Meghan’s Detriment

In the run-up to the release of his memoir “Spare,” Prince Harry has been busy promoting the tell-all, including by granting an interview on ITV News with journalist Tom Bradby aired on Jan. 9, 2022. In the discussion, Harry opened up about the trials and tribulations detailed in his book about his life in the British royal family, including his attacks against the press for its intrusive practices and accusations against senior members of the family of colluding with them.

Ever since officially leaving the royal family, Prince Harry has made it his mission to be transparent with the public about the difficulties he and his wife, Meghan Markle, experienced within the institution. Among them was their Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021 and in 2022, the release of their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” chronicling the pair’s romantic journey and experiences under intense public scrutiny. This has been followed by “Spare,” Harry’s memoir whose title originates from claims the prince learned that after he was born, his father, King Charles III, had told his mother, Princess Diana, shortly after his birth that she had “given me an heir and a spare.”

Harry’s memoir, released on Jan. 10, 2023, comprised a plethora of explosive allegations. Among them were that he was in denial through much of his childhood about the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a car crash in 1997, and that it was his brother, Prince William, and his wife, Kate Middleton, who had encouraged him to wear the infamous nazi uniform for a costume party in 2005. Read on to find out more about what Harry told ITV and who he believed was the true “villain” of the royal family.

Prior to the airing of his ITV interview, Prince Harry had gone on “60 Minutes” to discuss his memoir “Spare” with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. In their sit-down aired on Jan. 8, 2023, Harry laid bare his experience in the wake of the tragedy, including the moment he was told about Princess Diana’s passing. His father, King Charles III, was the one to tell him.

“I was in shock, you know? Twelve years old, sort of 7:00 – 7:30 in the morning early. Your father comes in, sits on your bed, puts his hand on your knee and tells you, ‘There’s been an accident.’ I – I couldn't believe (it),” Harry told Cooper, who then responded by quoting a passage from “Spare” in which Harry had written, “Pa didn’t hug me. He wasn’t great at showing emotions under normal circumstances. But his hand did fall once more on my knee and he said, ‘It’s going to be okay.’”

Harry then told Cooper he felt alone throughout his mother’s funeral.

“There was a lot of tears. I talk about how wet people’s hands were. And I couldn’t understand it at first. … Their hands were wet from wiping their own tears away. I do remember one of the strangest parts to it was taking flowers from people and then placing those flowers with the rest of them. As if I was some sort of middle person for their grief. And that really stood out for me,” he revealed

Harry said he only cried once over his mother’s passing. “Once my mother’s coffin actually went into the ground, that was the first time that I actually cried. Yeah, there was never another time,” Harry said. Cooper then asked, “All through your teenage years… you didn’t cry about it?”

“No,” Harry remarked.

Harry had shut down emotionally as he was in denial about his mother’s passing, telling Cooper:

“For a long time, I just refused to accept that she was gone. Part of… she would never do this to us, but also part of, maybe this is all part of a plan.”

He said, for years, he believed Diana had only “decided to disappear for a time” and would “call us and that we would go and join her.” Harry added he wasn’t alone in feeling this way as “William and I talked about it as well. He had similar thoughts.”

It was only when Harry was 20 years old that he first saw photographs of the crash, saying he wanted “proof.”

“Proof that she was in the car. Proof that she was injured. And proof that the very paparazzi that chased her into the tunnel were the ones that were taking photographs of her lying half dead on the back seat of the car,” he said, adding his private secretary had persuaded him not to view more graphic pictures.

“All I saw was the back of my mom’s head – slumped on the back seat. There were other more gruesome photographs, but I will be eternally grateful to (my private secretary) for denying me the ability to inflict pain on myself by seeing that. Because that's the kinda stuff that sticks in your mind forever,” Harry added.

Despite a trip to Paris to cover the same route his mother took that fateful day and the fact he and William considered reopening an inquest determining the crash to be a “tragic accident,” Harry remained doubtful as to whether any new actions would help give him closure.

“Do I need any more than I already know? No. I don’t think it would change much.”

Prince Harry’s sit-down with Bradby for ITV News also unveiled a host of bombshells and revelations about the royal British household and Harry’s experiences within its hallowed halls. Among them were insights into Harry’s relationship with Prince William and Kate, as well as their frosty behavior towards his wife, Meghan. He told Bradby while the pair had been fans of Meghan’s TV show “Suits,” they held reservations about her as she was an “American actress, divorced, biracial.” When pressed by Bradby to state whether William and Kate “almost from the get-go” did not “get on” with Meghan, Harry agreed.

“The idea of the four of us being together was always a hope for me. Before it was Meghan, whoever it was going to be, I always hoped that the four of us would get on. But very quickly, it became Meghan versus Kate,” Harry remarked, adding his brother had also told him prior to his wedding to Meghan that “he aired some concerns very early, and said ‘this is going to be really hard for you’ and I still to this day don’t truly understand which part of what he was talking about. Maybe he predicted what the British press’s reaction was going to be.”

In “Spare,” Harry claimed he came to physical blows with William in an argument about Meghan. He told Bradby that William “wanted me to hit him back, but I chose not to. But again, so much of the relationship between me and William and the way it played out was because of the narrative – the distorted narrative – that was being pushed through the British press. And some people within his office were feeding him utter nonsense.”

Prince Harry also used the ITV interview to speak publicly for the first time about Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial article. In his column published by The Sun, the former “Top Gear” presenter wrote “he was "dreaming of the day when (Meghan) is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”

The opinion piece has since been pulled, but the effects had already hit Harry hard. He told Bradby Clarkson’s words were “horrific,” “hurtful” and “cruel.”

“It also encourages other people around the UK and around the world, men particularly, to go and think that it's acceptable to treat women that way,” Harry added. He then went on to say the royal family’s choice not to denounce the article showed its true colors.

“The world is asking for some form of comment from the monarchy. But the silence is deafening. To put it mildly… Everything to do with my wife, after six years, they haven’t said a single thing. … It’s no longer a case of me asking for accountability, but at this point, the world is asking for accountability.”

When the interview circled back to Harry and Meghan remarks about their interview with Oprah. Harry denied they had explicitly accused the monarchy of racism when they said a member of the royal family made “troubling” comments about their son Archie’s skin color. Instead, he said it was an example of “unconscious bias.”

“Did Meghan ever mention that they’re racist?” Harry asked before denying they had made such accusations and adding, “the British press said that.”

Some of the most poignant moments were when Prince Harry touched on his relationship with his father and brother. With Cooper, Harry was asked whether he was still in contact with Prince William.

“Do you speak to William now? Do you text?” Cooper asked, to which Harry replied, “Currently, no.”

“But I look forward to us being able to find peace,” he added. As for whether he was on speaking terms with his dad, Harry said, “We haven’t spoken for quite awhile.”

“Can you see a day when you would return as a full-time member of the royal family?” Cooper then asked.

“No, I can’t see that happening,” Harry responded quickly and succinctly.

With Bradby, Harry remarked he desired “reconciliation” with his family, but there needed to be “accountability.”

“I think there’s probably a lot of people who, after watching the documentary and reading the book, will go: ‘How could you ever forgive your family for what they’ve done?’ People have already said that to me,” Harry told Bradby.

“I said, forgiveness is 100% a possibility because I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back. At the moment, I don’t recognise them, as much as they probably don’t recognise me.”

From his memoir and interviews, it’s clear Harry is no fan of the British press. With Bradby, however, he revealed he found pushback from his father when airing his opinions about stamping down on the press.

“Again, what’s happened to my wife and what’s happened to us happens to so many people on a daily basis because of the British press. Because of the racism, because of the cronyism, because of the lies. My father said to me that it was probably a ‘suicide mission’ to try and change the press.”

In the ITV interview, Harry's most scathing criticism was reserved for the British press, but he also launched a broadside against members of the family who used the media to further their own agendas. In questioning Harry on his relationship with his father, King Charles III's wife, Queen Consort Camilla, Bradby was told some revelatory claims.

"You say that your interests were sacrificed on her PR altar?" Bradby asked. Harry responded with a shake of the head, adding, "Those certain members have decided to get into bed with the devil, right? To rehabilitate their image. But the moment that that rehabilitation comes at the detriment of others – me, other members of my family – then that's where I draw the line."

This sentiment echoed Harry's previous description of Camilla as a "villain" in an interview with American journalist Anderson Cooper on Jan. 8, 2023. In the "60 Minutes" episode, Harry said, "(Camilla) was the villain. She was the third person in their marriage. She needed to rehabilitate her image," adding:

"That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press. And there was open willingness on both sides to trade of information. And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her, on the way to being Queen Consort, there was gonna be people or bodies left in the street because of that."

He also told Cooper both he and his brother had urged their father not to marry her. "We thought that it was gonna cause more harm than good and that if he was now with his person, that – surely that's enough. Why go that far when you don't necessarily need to?"

However, Harry remained optimistic there was a way back, saying any moves toward reconciliation were "in his family's court."
