Tension has simmered in England ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they would retire from being senior working members of the British royal family.

The announcement occurred on Jan. 8, 2020, in a move popularly dubbed “Megxit.” By spring 2020, the transition was complete; Prince Harry and Meghan stopped performing royal duties.

Publicly, Harry has expressed growing frustration with the monarchy, particularly regarding its handling of media scrutiny and internal family dynamics.

Additionally, his outspoken remarks in interviews and his memoir have deepened the rift, highlighting his desire for more personal autonomy and a break from royal expectations.

Although Harry and Meghan stepped down from their duties as senior royals, they have not shunned the spotlight, appearing at public charity events and pursuing their own creative and philanthropic ventures, many under their brand, Archewell Foundation.

However, tensions between their small family and the royals have grown, creating a wall between them. Scrutiny of Harry and Meghan has intensified, and people have started expressing their disdain for every move and decision they make, especially regarding the lives of their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet

On Apr. 9, 2024, an alleged royal insider revealed that there had been talk of King Charles wishing to turn over a new leaf by extending an olive branch to Prince Harry and Meghan to reunite with his grandchildren.

The insider claimed:

“I can see Charles desperately wanting to see the children, and extending this olive branch to Meghan and Harry. He may decide that life is just too short.”

“Balmoral is truly the perfect, restful place for a reunion. If he does issue an invite, then Harry and Meghan should surely agree to the visit,” the source continued.

However, Prince Harry’s spokesperson stated that a reunion between Harry and Charles wouldn’t be possible, saying:

“In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the U.K. this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full program. The Duke of course is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.”

People were highly disappointed following the solemn news, with one user on X saying:

“That’s absolutely unforgivable, that a Dad can’t prioritize his son. King or not!!!”

Another user frustratingly wrote:

“Harry deserves better. Shame on #KingCharles. He treated #PrincessDiana terrible as well. #TheWholeWorldIsWatching.”

In May 2024, King Charles conferred Prince William with the prestigious title of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, which was believed to have been reserved for his younger son, Prince Harry.

Buckingham Palace initially announced Prince William’s new title, saying:

“His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.”

Although this was an extremely low blow to Prince Harry, it does not dismiss that his ties to the Armed Forces run deep as he has worked there for 10 years.

In detail, he served two Afghanistan duty tours with the British Army before ending his operational duties in 2015.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believed this left Prince Harry distraught, to say the least, and the announcement purportedly left him “in tears.”

The royal expert claimed:

“King Charles’ announcement that Prince Harry is being stripped of his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Corps is a real kick in the teeth for the son who always felt marginalized.”

The royal expert also claimed the senior royals were aware of the emotional damage they would be causing Prince Harry but “have decided the gloves are off.”

The spokesperson continued to justify the situation:

“Harry needs to realize that when you betray the family, you don’t just escape the things you hated doing as a working royal. You also lose the things you loved.”

It’s worth noting that Prince Harry held the position of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps very close and dear to his heart, and he was “very proud” of it.

Fitzwilliams added that Prince Harry’s time in the Army Corps was purportedly “a rare happy time in his life” where the public viewed him “as a man” and not as a royal family member.

Fitzwilliams claimed that Prince Harry’s “last few ties to his old life are being cut and he is being set adrift, permanently.” However, the Duke of Sussex did resist the constant pushback. He fought against being pushed out of the family.

And in a power move on May 9, 2024, Prince Harry was seen wearing his KCVO Neck Order and Star, conferred by his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, at St. Paul’s Cathedral for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

The medal recognizes an individual’s service to the monarchy and is awarded as part of the Royal Victorian Order.

Royal author Tom Quinn has also speculated on why the Prince chose to wear his medal of honor:

“Wearing this was Harry’s way of reminding his family that his grandmother valued his contribution (...) wearing the medal is Harry’s way of saying ‘You’ve taken everything else from me, but you can’t take this!’”

In June 2015, BBC reported that the late Queen Elizabeth II had made her grandson, Prince Harry, a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Harry served in the Army for a decade, including tours in Afghanistan.

Despite everything, his appearance at the cathedral allegedly signaled to his family that “he’s not the bad boy he’s portrayed as being.”

In January 2024, Prince Harry opened up about how his mother, the late Princess Diana, would feel about his relationship with his brother, Prince William. He sincerely stated:

“I think she would be sad.”

He added:

“I think she’d be looking at it long term to know that there are certain things that we need to go through to be able to heal the relationship,” the Prince continued.

Royal expert Fitzwilliams had also speculated about Prince Harry and King Charles III, stating:

“This is one of the most public rifts in the world. If it was handled in private without so much press speculation, it would have a better chance of being resolved.”
