In yet another chapter of the ongoing saga between Prince Harry and the British royal family, an official statement that reportedly left King Charles III fuming has now been deleted. The Duke of Sussex and his family have been at odds for years, with issues on either side deepening the rift between them. This time, it seems that a statement from Prince Harry’s end might have kept him in his father’s bad books. The statement, believed to have been shared by Prince Harry’s team in 2016, along with Prince Harry’s explanation in his book, “Spare,” showed tensions had been plaguing the family for years.
The post was reportedly uploaded on the royal family's website, which allegedly infuriated both the King and the Prince of Wales. In the statement, Prince Harry called out the British press for their harassment of his then-girlfriend, Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s contentious relationship with the media has long been an issue, even resulting in a libel suit between Prince Harry and the Daily Mail. Though the statement was eventually removed, it created significant waves within the royal family and affected Harry’s relationship with his father and brother.
The statement, touching on themes of racism and sexism, upset Harry’s inner circle as it was the first of its kind in the royal family. While Prince Harry’s previous relationships were in the public eye, criticism targeting Meghan prompted Harry to defend her.
Prince Harry’s critique of the British media came after supposed racial and sexist slander against Meghan was published days after their relationship went public. In the statement, his fears for Meghan’s safety were explained.
“The past week has seen a line crossed,” the statement read. “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”
This bold move to protect his then-girlfriend did not go over well with the royal family, particularly his father, King Charles and brother, Prince William. In his memoir, “Spare,” Harry wrote that his father was “furious” at him for releasing the statement. In the book, he explained that:
“My statement generated a whole new onslaught — from my family,” he recalled. “Pa and Willy were furious. They gave me an earful. My statement made them look bad, they both said. ‘Why in hell?’ Because they’d never put out a statement for their girlfriends or wives when they were being harassed.”
The statement has since been removed from the royal family’s official website, with speculation that this was done in December 2023. Although he was advised that “silence was the best option,” Harry explained his reasons for not heeding that advice in “Spare” writing:
“We needed a statement out there," he wrote in the book. "Within a day we had a draft. Strong, precise, angry, honest.”
No official explanation has been given as to why it was removed from the official website.
