As the world woke up on August 31, 1997, the tragic news of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, had taken over every broadcast, and almost the whole world went into mourning.

Royal Biographer Penny Junior revealed in her 2005 book “The Firm” what Prince Charles’ reaction to the death of his newly divorced wife was.

According to the book, which is quoted by express.co.uk, when Prince Charles initially heard of the accident he was only aware that Princess Diana was injured.

“They’re all going to blame me, aren’t they?” was Prince Charles first question when he heard the news.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana had only finalized their divorce the year prior to the accident, a process that would end up being messy and very public. The world would prove to take the People’s Princess’ side and subsequently turn against Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. As a result, the Prince was seemingly worried the public would potentially blame him for his ex-wife’s accident.

The book revealed that the Prince of Wales was worried that the world’s reaction to Princess Diana’s accident could potentially end the monarchy. His private secretary Stephen Lamport agreed, reportedly saying, “Yes, sir, I think it could. It’s going to be very difficult for your mother, sir.”

Lamport also reportedly warned the Prince his mother, Queen Elizabeth II would likely have to do things she “may not want to do” in order to save the Monarchy from its demise.

Prince Charle’s concern he would be blamed by the public for Diana’s death proved to be founded.

“Had he loved Diana instead of his mistress, people argued in their anger, Diana would still be alive,” Junior wrote in her book.
