In the last part of the game, the contestants must bid or guess very close to the combined price of a number of items and make sure it doesn’t exceed it. In the case of Patrice Masse from Grande Prairie, Alberta, he had to guess the price of an espresso machine, a trip to Miami, and a brand-new Kia K5 sedan—he guessed that it all cost a total of $39,500.

As Carey read the actual price, he stepped back, clearly astonished.

“So let me just tell you,” he stalled before announcing the actual price, which was only a dollar lower than Masse’s estimate: $39,501.

Upon announcing, the entire studio celebrated, especially Masse, who was floored and speechless by how accurate his guess was.

Carey even clarified that Masse’s guess was all by himself as he hadn’t had help from the audience. Masse’s extraordinary guess was a rare feat, making him the first contestant to come within a dollar of the exact price.

On social media, people also celebrated Masse’s astonishing win. Carey dubbed it the “best showcase bid in the show's history.”

“Outside of the perfect bid in 2008 that was marred with controversy, this is the closest a contestant has been to perfection!  A contestant missed by $2 in 1980!” a user said on YouTube

“Holy smokes! First time ever during Drew’s era somebody won a double showcase with a difference of only $1!” another commented.

“I don’t think some people realize how insane this is. The odds of that are so low. I thought he was over by just a dollar but when he was off by a dollar and was a double showcase winner, I was absolutely mind blown!” one wrote.
