Pregnant Mom Has Home Birth, Only To Realize Her '13-Pound Baby’ Is Actually Twins

Like many parents, Meagan and Connor Peoples from Waverly, Minnesota were very excited about their pregnancy. The couple already had two children when they realized that they were expecting their third child. Much to their surprise, they found out that their very large "13-pound baby" was actually twins. In the video below from September 7, 2020, Megan explains how COVID restrictions played a major part in her decision to forgo any ultrasounds and to have a home birth.

When Meagan's baby measured large during her most recent pregnancy, both she and Connor realized that they were expecting a significantly large child. For the couple, that was not anything new as their other kids had also been big babies.

“Meagan always has really large babies,” Connor told CBS Minnesota. “We were fully expecting that trend to continue, and have like a…13-pound baby."

The couple confirmed the pregnancy just as COVID-19 was becoming a public concern. The virus would later become a full-blown pandemic, significantly altering how people seek and receive maternal services. As part of the precautionary measures, many hospitals would not allow Meagan's husband to accompany her to the hospital. Since she was used to having Connor by her side every time she visited the hospital for an ultrasound, she was not happy with this development.

CBS Minnesota reported that Meagan refused to visit an ultrasound imaging center without her husband because she did not want to incur hundreds of dollars and go alone.

“It’s his baby, too,” Meagan said. “I’m not going to come without my partner."

She had ultrasounds with her earlier children, and "All signs were that her baby was doing well," she says in the video below.

Due to the current global pandemic and the risks involved in delivering at a health facility, the couple was unwilling to leave anything to chance. They decided that Meagan would deliver the baby in their living room with the assistance of the midwives as this was the only way to guarantee that Connor would be present at the birth of their third child's delivery.

Meagan delivered her son, August, safely in their living room on September 5, 2020. A few minutes later, one of the midwives announced what the couple did not expect to hear — "Oh Lord, there's another!"  The news came as a surprise to the couple because they never imagined that they were expecting twins. Additionally, they had not visited an ultrasound-imaging center to ascertain that they were expecting a single baby. Not even the midwives suspected that Meagan was carrying twins, which meant that the news shocked them too.

Megan said in the CBS video below that generally twins are "stacked," but in this case, they were one above the other, which meant that the midwives only felt baby number two at the beginning. 

For many people, expecting a 13-pound baby would be enough reason to suspect they are expecting twins, but for Meagan and Connor, having a history with significantly bigger babies led them to believe it was still a single baby. The fact that the two did not visit an ultrasound center also made it possible for Meagan to carry twins until they were delivered without knowing it.
