Pregnant Meghan Markle Spotted Carrying Grown-Up Archie Over Growing Baby Bump

Meghan Markle, who is due to give birth to a baby girl this summer, was spotted on Wednesday, April 21 for the first time since husband Prince Harry’s returned to the U.S. from his grandfather’s funeral at Windsor Castle. In the photos, the actress-turned-royal was wearing a mask and carrying her 1-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Doctors reportedly told Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, that it would not be safe for the 39-year-old expecting mother to travel to the U.K. for Prince Philip’s April 17 funeral due to her pregnancy and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Markle and Harry announced that they were expecting another child in February 2021, though the couple waited until a March 7 interview with Oprah Winfrey to reveal the baby’s sex. Both announcements come after Markle penned a New York Times op-ed in November 2020 wherein she revealed that she had had a miscarriage that summer. In the op-ed, which has received praise in the press, Markle spoke to the taboo that people connect with losing a child.

Since January 2020, Markle and Harry have undergone several life transitions as they continue to distance themselves from the royal family. Not only have the two stepped back from their roles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but the two also moved to a new home in California. It is there, in Santa Barbara, where Markle is likely to give birth to her second child. As for what Archie and the baby girl’s relationship to the royal family will look like, only time will tell. Archie is currently seventh in line for the royal throne.

The publication PageSix posted the photo series on Thursday, April 22. In the photos, you can see Markle walking in Los Angeles while holding Archie, who will turn 2 years old on May 6. The photos are said to show the duchess for the first time since her husband Harry returned to California from his last-minute trip to Philip’s April 17 funeral. Today reported on Harry’s return on April 21, 4 days after his grandfather’s funeral.

While Markle and Harry’s announcement that they were expecting a girl is no doubt exciting news for the royal family, it has been largely overshadowed by the controversy that surrounds what seems like a growing rift between the royal family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In February 2021, Buckingham Palace stripped Harry of his royal titles, as The New York Times reports. The move came after Markle and her husband announced to the world in January 2020 that they would be stepping back from their duties as royals. The couple literally distanced themselves from the royal family in the summer of 2020 when they moved from the U.K. to Southern California. After a brief stint in Los Angeles, the couple moved to a home in Montecito, which is located in Santa Barbara county, according to Elle.

Tensions reached a new peak in March 2021 after Harry and Markle criticized the royal family and its culture during an interview with Winfrey — the same interview in which the couple announced that they were expecting a girl.

That’s why all eyes were on Harry during and after his grandfather’s April 17 funeral. According to Today, his recent trip to the U.K. marked the first time he had been together with his brother, Prince William, in more than a year.

The somber occasion was also the first time the brothers had spoken to each other since the controversial Winfrey interview.

Markle’s family life hasn’t escaped controversy either. In November 2020, Markle published an opinion piece in The New York Times that spoke to a miscarriage she had that summer while also criticizing the stigma that surrounds losing a child. While many have praised the essay for its honesty, others took issue with the piece.

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” Markle wrote. “In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

According to Buzzfeed News, Chrissy Teigen took to Twitter to defend Markle from critics of the piece; her tweets have since been deleted, however.

Teigen, who has also written publicly about a miscarriage she had in 2020, recently revealed in an interview with Andy Cohen that she received a letter from Markle regarding losing her own child.

"She had written to me about baby Jack, and loss," Chrissy told Cohen. "She is really wonderful, and so kind — just as kind as everyone says she is."

"That's why you look at everything, and you're like, 'My god, what is absolutely wrong with people that they have to make this person out to be so malicious or so crazy, when it's just as simple as them being as kind as everybody says they are,'" the model added.
