Human trafficking can involve several types of exploitation including holding victims as modern-day slaves and forcing them into sexual acts resulting in pornography and prostitution. Approximately 80 percent of trafficking cases involve sexual exploitation and 20 percent involves exploitation as human laborers. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that nearly 600,000 to 800,000 people, adults and children, are taken across international borders each year with 80 percent of them being women and approximately half of them children.

The National Human Trafficking Hotline reports that more calls are made from the state of Texas than any other state in the country, probably because of the proximity to Mexico. 15 percent of the calls derive from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
