The conversation regarding Dublin’s homeless crisis has been sparked by recent images of a five-year-old reaching for biscuits at a homeless shelter.

Heartbreaking photographs of the boy known only by the alias “Sam” have gone viral after being posted on social media. In other shots, he can be seen nestled on a crate in the street after finishing his school day. He is no stranger to seeking sustenance at the nonprofit Feed Our Homeless.
The Dublin-based philanthropic group has addressed the city’s homeless crisis at length, and they have called for the housing minister’s resignation. They have stated that Sam resides in emergency accommodations that lack cooking facilities.

In pictures, posted online by Feed Our Homeless, Sam can be seen eating biscuits and pasta off of cardboard. The charity seeks to call attention to the plight of a profusion of displaced families.
Of the images, they have voiced, “There are no words for these photos tonight. This is a national shame, the homeless crisis continues to get worse, not better."

“This young child in his school uniform and his bag just left school a few hours ago and is now having his dinner at Feed Our Homeless food station tonight. It’s certainly becoming the norm here at the FOH food station every single week for young homeless children to have their dinner here simply because they have no cooking facilities available to them in their emergency accommodation," the post continued.
An August 2019 report as cited by the Metro showed that there were 2,850 children and 6,143 adults suffering homelessness or residing in temporary or emergency housing in Ireland’s capital city.

Eoghan Murphy, Minister for Housing, has been called out by Feed Our Homeless’ CEO and founder, Tony Walsh. He has claimed that Murphy’s policies have failed. The philanthropist has also called on Murphy to resign and has deemed the worsening housing crisis a “national shame.”
Shed light on this dire situation by encouraging others to read about Sam and so many other children just like him. Without public awareness, this situation stands to become much worse.
