British musician Peter Gabriel takes his 70th turn around the sun today. In a big milestone birthday, let’s celebrate with a look back at his iconic career.

Gabriel started off in Genesis before his successful solo career, much like his bandmate Phil Collins. After leaving the pop band in 1975, according to Encylopedia Britannica, Gabriel went on to develop his interest in technology and politics through music.

His solo career kicked off with the #1 hit “Solsbury Hill” and then shortly followed by “Sledgehammer.” The latter’s video was the most played clip on MTV according to a 2011 Time report, proving Gabriel’s genius not just with music but with media as well. It also was evidence of his foray into world music.

His interests came together with the founding of the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Festival in 1982 and Real World Records in 1989, which is a label that gives international artists access to recording facilities and global audiences according to their website.

He is the winner of six Grammy awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice over -- once for Genesis and once as a solo artist.

His music was also used in one of the most iconic scenes in cinema. The romantic, timeless, song “In Your Eyes” was the lynchpin for the movie “Say Anything,” when Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack, holds up his boombox to win over Diane Court (Ione Skye) outside of her window.
