Doing chores around the house has always been a bone of contention in many homes. No one really likes doing them, but they are necessary if the home must run well. So, the person who needs the stability and functionality of a clean home often does them anyway. In most cases, it happens to be the woman.
Gender stereotypes often play a huge part in this situation. Although more men have started cleaning, cooking, and shopping, a substantial population still doesn't want to do chores they consider feminine. Meanwhile, some think they shouldn't even be doing any chores.
Similarly, many children do not do chores, but in this case, it is because they haven't been asked to. People make different excuses about why they don't give their children chores. Some say they don't want their children to touch dangerous chemicals used for cleaning, while some claim that asking their children to work is similar to turning them into maids.
However, the importance of starting children on housework as soon as they can cannot be overemphasized. Technology has lessened the burden of house tasks, but there are still so many things children can do, like cleaning their bathrooms, loading the dishwasher, and picking up their toys.
A pediatrician and dad of five has encouraged parents to give their children tasks as early as possible because it is the key to raising happy and successful children. The medical practitioner shared the advice on his TikTok channel on June 20, 2023. Continue reading to know how chores help children.
TikTok user @Tiktokkiddoc shared a tip for parents who want "healthy and happy and well-rounded kids" on June 20, 2023.
The video has been viewed almost a million times and has over 88,000 likes and 14,000 shares. The TikToker mentioned that he is a board-certified pediatrician and a father of five children.
"There is a 75-year-old study from Harvard that you should know about. Researchers found that if you implement this one small thing in your child's life, they're more likely to be happy as adults, have more empathy towards other people, and they're more successful in their careers," he started.
The dad of five added, "A different 20-year study from the University of Minnesota found that this simple change was the best predictor of overall adult success, especially if started in an earlier age."
He revealed that the secret is in doing chores. He also explained how it can help achieve this and said, "Having your children do chores gives them a sense of self-worth, and it helps them to realize that they're contributing to a larger ecosystem."
The dad further explained that contributing to the house makes children unselfish and empathetic. He added that when children do chores, it helps strengthen the bond in the family. The medical professional continued, "Chores help to instill a better work ethic which translates pretty well into school and career success."
However, the doctor felt there was a problem. "The problem is in a survey of 1,000 parents, they found that only 28% of you guys are routinely giving chores to your children," he disclosed. "My advice is to hand that child a toilet brush and just watch the college scholarships roll on in.”
