Passerby Saw Dog Bleeding From Head in A Hole And Knew He Couldn't Just Leave Him To Die

Of all the animals that humankind has domesticated, the dog is the one that has been with us the longest. Perhaps that is why we often hear stories about dogs saving their owners from every kind of danger you could imagine.

I've heard of dogs saving their owners (and sometimes other people as well) from house fires, wild animals, criminals, drowning, and all sorts of other dangers. When we read a story like this one, it feels good to know that humans are holding up our end of the bargain.

So apparently, a little beagle pup named Frankie wandered almost 15 miles from home and was struck by a car at some point along the way. When Dave Keller of Janesville, Wisconsin saw a sad-looking puppy in a ditch by the roadside, he couldn't help but stop and see if the little dog was alright. Upon closer inspection, he found that the dog was definitely not alright. Frankie had a huge gash in his head, and blood was dripping down his head in surprisingly large amounts.

Alarmed, Keller looked around to see if the dog's owners might be nearby. Seeing no one, he scooped the dog up and took him home. Once there, Keller cleaned the dog's wounds as best he could and called a veterinarian. At first, it really seemed as if the dog's wounds were too severe and that he would die.

Puppies like Frankie are often more susceptible to injuries and disease than a full-grown dog. However, he made a full recovery, and many attributed this to a large amount of loving care that he received from the moment he was found.

In cooperation with the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin, Frankie was matched up with a foster family who could give Frankie the kind of constant attention that he needed during his recovery. Dave Keller was not able to provide this due to the demands of his job, but Chris Stanek and his family volunteered.

During this time, the dog's owners were finally located after a difficult and exhaustive search. An investigation was conducted by the Rock County Sheriff's office to determine if they had any potential involvement in the dog's injury. After looking into the matter, authorities decided that the family was not responsible for the injury and that it was almost certainly the result of being struck by a car.

Considering that a small puppy (from a short-legged breed, I might add) was somehow able to travel fifteen miles despite a life-threatening injury, one can understand their suspicions. However, no one knows exactly how much time elapsed between the accident and Frankie's lucky meeting with Dave Keller.

It seems likely that the dog was found shortly after being hit, and that he would have died without help. That kind of blood loss would disable any animal before long, but thankfully we don't have to go any farther with such speculations because Frankie survived and is in good health to this day.
