Finding out that you've given birth to a healthy, happy baby is every new parent's dream come true. For one mom, though, that dream quickly turned into a nightmare. When your newborn's health suddenly takes a turn for the worse it's natural for a parent to feel scared.

But imagine the shock, horror, and outrage you'd experience if you found out that your healthy baby had been given a completely unnecessary medical procedure that could possibly end up negatively impacting their health for years to come.

That's exactly the position a new mom in Tennessee found herself in when her little baby boy was still in the hospital after she had just given birth.

Jennifer Melton's baby boy Nate seemed to be completely healthy. He was eating well and adapting great to his life outside the womb.

When the nurse came to pick up baby Nate from his mom for a routine physical a day after he was born his mom thought nothing of it.

As she understood it, her baby would only be gone for a short time to get his blood type and weight tracked and then he would be brought safely back to his mother's arms.

Boy, was she in for an unpleasant surprise!

When the nurse returned with baby Nate she mentioned how the procedure the doctor had performed on him had gone.

Immediately Jennifer felt confused. She hadn't anticipated her baby having a procedure done.

The nurse went on to talk about "tongue clipping." Instead of a routine physical, the doctor had performed a frenulectomy on baby

Nate, removing the tissue that connects the floor of the mouth and the tongue together!

Jennifer was livid when she opened her baby's mouth and saw blood beneath his tiny tongue. She burst into tears and demanded to know why she hadn't been informed about this procedure before it had taken place.

When she found out the answer to her questions she was even more outraged. As it turned out, the doctor had made a terrible mistake.

He had asked for the wrong infant to be brought into the surgery room! The University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tennessee wouldn't comment on the mixup when asked by reporters.

Any long-term adverse side effects from the unnecessary surgery have yet to be seen.

Jennifer is speaking out about this extremely unfortunate incident to help raise awareness of these kinds of hospital procedural mistakes.

She doesn't want other newborns to suffer or their parents to be traumatized by finding out that their healthy babies have been victims of medical negligence.

She hopes that other parents will ask questions and double check what is going to happen before handing their babies off to medical staff for physicals.
