Nicole Kidman Boldly Donned A Sheer Black Dress That Turned Heads And Proved She's A Fashion Icon

Ever since rising to fame in the early 1980s in her home country of Australia, Nicole Kidman has been renowned for her acting skills in several films and television shows. Over a decade later, the Academy Award-winning actress took over the international scene, as she amassed a massive fanbase.

Since almost all films require their stars to walk on red carpet events for movie premieres as well as major awards ceremonies, actors and actresses have to look their best whenever they strut down a venue in front of the flashing lights as cameras flicker.

This isn’t a problem for Kidman, as in almost every event she attends, she knows how to grab the attention of the press because of her array of clothing crafted by some of the best fashion houses around the world.

It appears that Kidman has a knack for fashion within her ever since she was a kid as revealed in an interview with InStyle published on May 31, 2017. 

She told the interviewer that she grew up with a grandmother and mother who both loved dressing up.

In addition to the people who inspired her during the early stages of her life, there were also big designers who spoke to her in terms of style including John Galliano, whom she met while he was working in Paris at Dior, as well as the late fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld, popularly known for his simple yet elegant works for Chanel.

In terms of costumes she wore in previous films, Kidman applauded Janet Patterson as one of the best after she saw her works for the movie “The Piano” and even wore her clothing for her character named Isabel Archer in “Portrait of a Lady.”

When it comes to choosing her clothes for star-studded events that she attends, Kidman doesn’t just approve of whatever is offered to her.

When asked if she had any rules or criteria regarding the outfits she would wear in an interview with Vanity Fair in June 2017, the actress detailed that she wanted to be relaxed for her “to be able to dance.”

“That’s an important rule for a dress — to be able to dance. At least wiggle!” she told the outlet.

There was a moment during the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 wherein the public was amazed by the numerous outfit changes she did in a span of days. At the time, the star proved that “fashion has such a power” because instead of people talking about the movies she starred in, they liked asking her about the dresses she wore.

“I’ve always loved fashion. I love embracing it and it’s rare that you get to really dress up,” she said.

Despite being the darling of the press at events due to her fashion choices, Kidman admitted that she’s not the same person at home as she doesn't dress up in her free time, that’s why when it came to Cannes, she embraced the moment because she loves “doing it.”

That year, as reported by Vogue Australia, she wore several pieces by renowned fashion houses like her embellished Dior dress, which reportedly took 1,000 hours of work, a silver Rodarte gown, a Calvin Klein dress and a dress by Versace.

Her looks didn’t stop there as she also flaunted a printed Giorgio Armani Privé gown, a nude-colored lace gown by Alexander McQueen, a sequin and feather-detailed dress by Chanel and a silver fringed dress by Michael Kors.

In total, Kidman wore seven different outfits for that year’s Cannes festivities.

When it comes to dressing up, Kidman also knows how to take risks, including the time when she strutted down the premiere of her movie “The Golden Compass” in Tokyo, Japan, in 2008. At the time, Keith Urban’s wife shocked onlookers when she arrived at the event wearing a sheer black dress designed with different textures.

According to Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, the outfit stood out because its bodice had a bralette-style top under a transparent black fabric that showed a little bit of her skin. For the skirt down, it featured a lace design and another set of sheer black material on top of a gray-colored lining. Since the dress was already extravagant on its own, Kidman kept it simple with her accessories as she only wore a simple bracelet and a pair of black heels. 

In terms of her beauty, the actress wore a low wavy ponytail, and her makeup popped due to her rose-colored shimmery lipstick.

This wasn’t the only moment where Kidman wowed the crowd with a daring look as she also attended the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards where she wore a rust-colored two-piece suit designed with two-colored beads by Chanel.

The overall look was head-turning as it had a plunging neckline, and she only closed one button on her top. According to WWD, Kidman worked with her usual stylist at the time, Julia von Boehm, to pull off the elegant outfit. 

The six-time Golden Globe Award-winning star was not the only one who looked sharp on the black carpet as she was also accompanied by Urban who wore a black suit paired with boots.
