Simon Cowell had to take a break from being one of the most beloved television villains after he suffered an accident. The TV personality broke his back on Aug. 8, 2020 after an incident with an electric bike at his home in Malibu, California. He fell off the bike, instantly injuring himself. Cowell was 60-years-old at the time of the accident. Thankfully, Cowell had the support of his family throughout his health journey and has recovered from the long surgery — not to mention the months of constant exercise he had to endure to bring his health back.
Cowell is most famously known for being a record executive, entrepreneur and a longtime television personality for a variety of competition shows in both the United States and England, including “America’s Got Talent” and “The X Factor.” He’s usually seen as the harsher judge on the shows due to his blunt and brutal honesty, but he typically has sound advice for the contestants. However, the TV star does have a soft spot in his heart for his girlfriend, Lauren Silverman, and their son Eric. In fact, the two played a crucial role in helping Cowell recover from his injury.
Cowell explained what happened to him in an Instagram post from Aug. 9, 2020, just a day after the injury occurred. “If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back,” Cowell wrote. According to People magazine, the injury required a five-hour surgery where he had fusions and a metal rod put in his back.
The Scary Accident
During an interview with Extra TV in February 2021, Cowell talked more about the severity of his injury. “It could have been a lot worse,” he said. He talked about the result from the accident in more detail, saying, “I really nearly smashed my spine to pieces. I literally wouldn’t have been able to walk.”
Cowell seemed hopeful and strong-willed to recover from the start, however. Right after the accident happened, he convinced himself that he had to get back into the house despite having just broken his back. “I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get back into the house because I can’t lie there,’ — and I saw their faces, you’re not supposed to get up — and I made myself kind of get carried into my bedroom, which is right at the end of the house,” he told Extra TV.
He talked more about the support he had from his family and how great they were at helping him during his recovery process. “She was amazing,” Cowell said of Silverman. “Both her and Eric, they were my support.” Cowell was apprehensive about having to explain what happened to his young son, but his girlfriend reassured him.
“I was so embarrassed about coming home looking about 100 because I couldn’t walk, and I have these metal rods in my back and all these screws,” Cowell said. “I said, ‘Lauren, I just don’t know how to explain it to Eric.’ She obviously said something to him because he came in and I was lying in bed and he said, ‘Daddy, you’re like Ironman,’ and I thought that was the sweetest thing, and it meant a lot.”

How Cowell Is Doing Now
Despite being in a lot of pain and not being able to move much, Cowell found light at the end of the tunnel. “Got to stay positive,” he said. While some may think plenty of rest would come from an injury this serious, Cowell seemed to note the opposite. He had to exercise a lot in order to feel better and work on his recovery. His optimistic attitude definitely assisted him in his lengthy recovery process.
Cowell did an interview for Access Hollywood with his co-stars from "America’s Got Talent" in February 2021. The group talked about being able to go into the new season together, and how they were starting auditions the following month. Cowell’s injury was healed and he was ready to get back to work. He explained how he felt “100 percent” better from the extreme amount of exercise he needed to do in order to recover from such a serious injury.
“You have to walk for miles a day,” he explained. Despite having a broken back for the better part of the past six months, Cowell was in relatively good spirits, mentally and physically. “I literally do feel more healthy than I did before,” he said. Cowell made light of the situation as he continued to talk about just how much better he was feeling. “I would suggest to anyone, when you want to stay healthy, break your back,” he said jokingly, thinking of all the physical activity he has put his body through to get to where he is today.
