When you hear of New York City, one of the first things that comes to mind, aside from Broadway and the busy streets, are towering skyscrapers filled with lights. However, there is one building in the Big Apple that has been surrounded by mystery.
Dubbed “the scariest building” by actor Tom Hanks in 2017, the said infrastructure stands over 40 stories high, has no windows, and is located on 33 Thomas Street.
Ever since the construction of the brutalist building was completed in 1974, it has been surrounded by mysteries as a lot of people have shared their own conspiracy theories as to why the property looked far different from others around the city.
In 2023, the building went viral on social media again, as it was constantly being shared almost every single year. A Reddit post struck a conversation between online users, and some of them shared their wildest guesses about the mysterious infrastructure located in one of the busiest cities in the world.
“That’s probably Vampire Headquarters,” one guessed, while another one joked, “That’s actually Lord Farquad’s castle…”
Other users expressed the feeling of uneasiness just by looking at pictures of the building, as one wrote, “This building makes me claustrophobic.”
“It is strange how some architecture can make people uncomfortable. This one nails it,” one wrote.
The Daily Mail also reported in September 2023 that there were people who theorized that the building might be filled with “lizard people” or even “aliens.”
Now that people shared their guesses, what was the building really used for?

The building on 33 Thomas Street in New York City began construction in 1969 and was finished in 1974. Its sole purpose was to house the AT&T telephone switching equipment.
Even though the windowless infrastructure, which is also called the Long Lines Building, stands over 40 stories, it only has 29 floors inside, as the floors are taller than average.
According to Daily Mail, there have been rumors circulating around the internet that the building was originally designed to survive a nuclear blast. In addition, there is also a supply of food that will feed over 1,500 people for two weeks in case an unfortunate event happens in the future.
Even though its function was to house AT&T’s long-distance telephone exchange, the company left in 1999, but other local exchange carriers still use parts of it.
The rumors surrounding the building didn’t stop there as The Intercept launched an investigation in 2016, which found that there are more things happening inside that the public didn’t know about.
The outlet and other conspiracy theorists believe that the Long Lines Building was a base of the National Security Agency.
They claimed that through their alleged leaked documents by Edward Snowden, the building used to be a surveillance site for the NSA and it was dubbed as TITANPOINTE.
Despite the speculations, the NSA refused to comment on the matter, and the building still captures the imagination of onlookers as of October 2023, as people still continue to share their theories online. Many of these theories seem to be more for fun than actual belief.
“They are experimenting on upside down. Most probably there is a Vecna inside,” one wrote, referencing the hit series “Stranger Things.”
“It’s where they keep The Matrix and The Upside Down,” another one wrote.
