Mother Is Caught On Video Tackling Peeping Tom Who Allegedly Watched Her Daughter In Her Bedroom

It’s natural for parents to protect their children. Mothers, specifically, have a natural tendency to be extra cautious and protective of their children, especially their young daughters. Mothers are always hard-wired to look after their daughters because they know the intricacies and special care that a young woman needs in today’s time. Even if it meant throwing themselves in the middle of danger, they would do it. 

In the case of Phyllis Pena in Lake Jackson, Texas, in January 2021, she had to physically throw herself in harm’s way and tackle a suspected Peeping Tom escaping police. 

When Pena arrived at her home on a Sunday morning, she saw a man peeping into her 15-year-old daughter’s room. She immediately called the police to arrest the guy. 19-year-old Zane Hawkins was successfully arrested shortly after. 

Just as the police, Pena, and her daughter were outside, the policemen’s car’s dash camera captured something that could only be seen in the movies. 

Making a go for it, Hawkins was trying to run from the police. Pena got in his way and tackled him, forcing him to the ground. Per Pena, her first instinct was to make sure that the perpetrator would not go any further. Her daughter also helped her keep the Peeping Tom on the ground just before the police officers could get to them. 

“I figured at least I could do if I got him down, trip ’em up, whatever. Then you know they’d have a chance to get caught up,” Pena told KPRC, an NBC News affiliate in Houston, Texas. 

According to the KPRC report, Pena’s child knew who the Peeping Tom was, but she did not know him personally and hadn't really spoken to him. As drugs were found on him, Hawkins faced charges of possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest, and resisting arrest.

Describing Pena’s attack as a “really good tackle,” Lake Jackson Sergeant Roy Welch explained that they had already nabbed the suspect but it tried to flee, making its way to Pena, who possessed all the brute force to pin him down to the ground before the officers could apprehend him again. 

“It’s not very often that we have somebody that actually steps in, puts themself in harm’s way to assist in apprehending somebody,” Welch told the outlet.

Welch even recalled getting fist-bumped by the officers, who jokingly told her that the Texans were looking for a new linebacker, referring to the Texas NFL team. 

“My kids are my life and (I’m) just making sure I protect them,” Pena told KPRC. 

People online praised Pena for her strength and confidence in throwing herself into the scuffle.

“Amazing mom!!! That’s good that she got him the cops looked pretty slow and if they would have lost him he would have continued his creepy behavior,” someone commented.
