Kate Middleton was seen consoling Prince Charles as they left Prince Phillip’s funeral on April 17, 2021. The touching moment was captured in a photo, showing Kate kissing her father-in-law on the cheek and placing her arm around his shoulder. Due to current restrictions, the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral was a small gathering of only 30 close family members at St. George’s chapel in Windsor.
It is believed that Prince Charles has been staying in London since visiting his father in the hospital over the past month. Usually, he lives at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire with his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall. Tragically, due to current regulations, Queen Elizabeth II was seated separate from her family and was prohibited from mingling with them after the service. She was seen being escorted back to the nearby Windsor Castle in a state-owned Bentley shortly after the funeral.
The photo of Kate and Prince Charles was taken as the small group of funeral-goers were leaving the chapel after their heartbreaking goodbye to Prince Phillip. In the photo, you can see the intense eye contact between the two, a sign that the moment was genuine and a heartfelt showing of compassion.
The tender moment seemed greatly appreciated by Prince Charles as he looked openly distraught while walking in the procession. Later, Kate was seen walking with her husband, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry as they met for the first time since the highly publicized Oprah Winfrey interview a month ago. She walked confidently alongside her husband, providing subtle support and comfort.
Body language expert Judi James analyzed the footage from the funeral for Daily Mail UK and said this about Prince Charles, “He’s never shown much emotion, but he did look genuinely distraught. After the procession it was downhill all the way for him – his eyes got very red and damp as he followed the coffin, but by the time he got to the church he was visibly in tears.” Such a tragic loss for this family, hopefully, they can continue to pull together and comfort one another in this trying time.
James had more to say about the queen’s presence at her husband’s funeral. She said, “There was one moment when she paused and turned around before entering the chapel and it looked terribly poignant, almost as though she couldn't face going in alone. She turned for what looked like reassurance that her party was behind her.” The queen and Prince Phillip were married for 73 years before he was laid to rest.
Despite not being a member of the family, the queen’s lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey was with her during the service, according to the same DailyMail article. James analyzed the queen’s body language and said, “She could be seen dabbing one eye as she sat in the car, suggesting tears, but she was also chatting to her lady-in-waiting, suggesting she was gathering some comfort from the company.” It is good that the queen was able to draw some comfort from her companion and was not completely alone during this difficult time.

James also analyzed the interaction between Kate, Prince Harry, and Prince William. She said, “We had this quite amazing scene where… Harry caught up with them and walked quite naturally between them. Kate turned her head and was immensely affectionate and chatty and then after a breath-taking moment suddenly William turned around and (he and Harry) started chatting. It was almost like the old days. Kate backed away which she wouldn’t have done if she thought there was going to be any problems.” It’s refreshing to see this family come together and try to mend fences during this time of grief.
James continues saying that the brothers looked reasonably relaxed and that she did not believe the instance to be a set-up for the cameras. The discussion happened after some of the family decided to walk back to the castle, despite cars being provided for the occasion. Both Prince William and Prince Harry were part of the funeral procession for their grandfather earlier in the day. Prince Harry took a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles to be at the service.
News outlets state that he was staying at his old residence, Frogmore Cottage while he is visiting. Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle did not accompany him on the trip due to her current pregnancy. According to Daily Mail UK, she is believed to be seven months along already.
Daily Mail UK also reported that Harry returned to California on Tuesday, April 20, just one day before his grandmother's 95th birthday. Check out the touching moment between Kate and Prince Charles in the video below!
