Mom Has Given Birth To One Of The UK’s Largest Babies On Record

Babies are typically born between 5.5 and 10lbs, but sometimes they can surprise us and weigh even more. Jade Bayer, 33, gave birth to her son, Ronny-Jay Fewtrell, on April 5, 2021, and he weighed an impressive 11lbs 5oz. This makes him one of the largest babies born in the U.K. in 20 years.
Bayer was in labor for 16 hours but gave birth naturally and without needing a C-section. The proud mother said that originally the doctors thought the baby would be 10lbs 6oz. but he was born nearly an entire pound heavier. At birth, Ronny-Jay was the size of a 4-month-old and wasn’t able to fit into any of the zero to three months old clothing. However, he is perfectly healthy and couldn’t be happier with his family.
Bayer has a set of twins as well, nine-year-old Vinny and Shilo who weighed 7lbs 10z and 7lbs 6oz at birth. The mother and her partner Scott Fewtrell, 29, explained that Ronny-Jay would likely be their last child. Fewtrell said that the baby’s siblings adore him and dote on him every chance they get.
Ronny-Jay was born at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Bayer could not stop praising the staff for taking such good care of her and the baby. The mother described her labor as traumatic, saying Ronny-Jay got stuck in the birth canal due to his size, and she almost needed a C-section to get him out. Fortunately, through hormones and an epidural, Ronny-Jay was welcomed safely into the world. Read on to see what Bayer had to say about her delivery of one of Britain’s biggest babies.
According to DailyMail, Bayer said, “We had an inkling at the very beginning Ronny was going to be big. I was big straight away, there was no hiding my pregnancy from the beginning. A lot of people were joking it was twins again because I carried bigger with Ronny than with the twins.”
She added:
“When he was born we had to ask to double check the weight because it was 5,000 grams and we didn't know how much that was. By the time they'd converted it, even the midwives were shocked and checked it again on the chart they had.”
Everyone knew right away that Ronny-Jay was one special baby. “One of them said he is the biggest baby that has been on the scales. The midwives were laughing saying his umbilical cord was like a tow rope. He went completely off the growth charts where they put the estimated weight and length — I think he was about the size of a four month old baby,” said Bayer.
After being in labor for around 15 hours, Bayer was exhausted. She said, “They had to increase the hormones in the drip but I wanted a C-section because I had been in labour so long and was tired. We were within minutes of going for one when the midwife said 'before you do that, you've been through a lot, would you try an epidural?’”
Altogether, Bayer had pethidine, gas and air and then the epidural, so she was awake when they went for a natural delivery. Ronny-Jay was born about half an hour after Bayer received the epidural and additional hormones.

Larger babies are typically born late, but Ronny-Jay was born four days before his due date. By the end of her pregnancy, the mother was feeling quite uncomfortable. Bayer said, “I was in that much pain towards the end of the pregnancy I kind of had to beg the consultant to be induced because I couldn't physically move or breathe. I've had big babies before but I could tell Ronny was different.”
Now, the baby is at home and doing great. “He's doing really well now, I haven't been able to weigh him recently because it's tricky getting a space in the clinics. But he is so chilled out, so happy, very content and I get good sleep with him,” the mother shared. Getting sleep with a newborn baby sounds like a dream come true for any mom.
As you can imagine, Ronny-Jay has a healthy appetite. Bayer explained, “I did breastfeed at the beginning but I wasn't able to produce as much as he was demanding. Then we combined and I could only breastfeed for three weeks, it was just too much strain. He wanted to feed constantly so the midwives did recommend I switch entirely to formula feed because I just couldn't produce what he needed.”
The happy mother could not be more grateful for the care she received while at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The staff was caring and attentive the entire time. Bayer said, “I can't thank the midwives enough for their continued support and work with me and the baby through my traumatic labour.”
