Mixed-Race Mom And Her Half-Jamaican Husband Left Surprised At The Different Skin Tones Of Their Twin Babies, Says People Ask If They Are Hers

Expectant parents always wonder what their newborns will look like. “Will the baby have my eyes?” “Will the baby’s head be covered in a crown of hair?” “Whose features will be predominant in the baby?” These are some of the questions and more that bug expecting parents eager to know what their child will look like. And regardless of all their predictions, the child’s appearance and features are usually a pleasant surprise to parents. 

While several influences, including lifestyle and nutrition, can determine what a child will look like, genetics plays a greater role than the rest. But in spite of that, there is no foolproof way of determining what features the child will pick from a pool of genes. According to The Bump, a professor of Biology from Georgia State University, Dongyu Jia explained that two parents could, in theory, produce more than 70 trillion unique kids with the possible chromosome combinations they pass down.

While many expectant parents are known to be curious, parents expecting twins take the cake for having twice as much curiosity as single parents. Parents expecting twin babies are curious about the type of twins they are having, their gender, and, of course, their physical features. 

The curiosity about the twins’ physical attributes is especially heightened if one of the parents is of mixed race. A 2011 article by the BBC revealed that there is a one in 500 chance that twin babies born to a genetically mixed race parent will have different skin colors.

In one such case, 29-year-old mom Chantelle Broughton gave birth to non-identical twins Ayon and Azirah, with completely different skin tones. On Sept. 2, 2023, she graced the “Good Morning Britain” show to discuss the one-in-a-million occurrence.

In April 2022, Broughton and her husband, Ashton, were shocked when they welcomed twin babies of different skin colors. Brighton revealed that the difference in their skin tone wasn’t as noticeable at birth, but as the twins grew older, it became evident that one was remarkably darker than the other. 

“Well, at first, it wasn’t as noticeable. They were quite similar in complexion, you could see she was slightly darker, but as the weeks and months have gone on, she’s just got darker and darker, and he’s just got lighter and lighter,” Broughton told the show hosts.

The auxiliary nurse revealed that the twins also had different eye colors, with son Ayon having greeny-blue eyes and daughter Azirah having brown eyes.

“Hers are really like dark brown like her dad’s, and his are like a greeny blue at the moment,” she shared.

She noted that she and her husband were surprised at their twins, as it was not common in twin births. According to Broughton, although she appears white, she is of mixed race as a result of her Nigerian maternal grandfather, while her husband is half Jamaican and half Scottish.

Like the parents, people who come across the unique twins are equally as puzzled at their differences. Broughton confessed:

“People just stop and say ‘oh my god’, they just look totally different. I’ve had people ask ‘Are they both yours?’ Although a lot of the time people don’t want to say it but when we tell them they say it’s crazy as you don’t see it very often.”
