Michael Jackson is known all over the world for his music and entertainment legacy, giving him the moniker the “King of Pop.” His long career, full of hit songs, show-stopping performances, and celebrity collaborations, has made him a household name. Although his life had some controversies, there’s no denying that Michael left a permanent mark on music history.
Michael was born into a musical family and formed a band with some of his brothers called the Jackson 5. After finding great success, Michael later embarked on a solo career, releasing chart-topping hits and winning plenty of awards. The 1980s were iconic for the star as he released two notable albums, “Thriller” and “Bad,” and also debuted his signature moonwalk dance.
It’s safe to say that pop music would not be what it is today without the musical talents of Michael. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy has surely lived on and continues to inspire many fans and artists all over the world.
In the past few decades, biopic films have been made to honor the life of a prominent figure or personality. Influential leaders, entertainment icons, and even musical legends have been the subject of many biopics. For example, Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury had “Bohemian Rhapsody,” where he was played by Rami Malek, Jennifer Hudson played the great songstress Aretha Franklin on “Respect,” Naomi Ackie channeled her inner Whitney Houston on “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
In January 2023, Deadline announced that Michael’s highly-awaited biopic would be played by none other than his own nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
Read on to learn more about who Jaafar is and details about the upcoming movie.
According to Deadline, Jaafar will be playing the King of Pop, his very own uncle, Michael, in an upcoming biopic to be produced by Lionsgate. “Olympus Has Fallen” director Antoine Fuqua will be directing the biopic.
“Proud to announce @jaafarjackson as Michael — the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop. Coming soon,” Fuqua said in an Instagram post.
For those who do not know Jaafar, he is the son of Jermaine Jackson, the older brother of Michael. His mother is Alejandra Jackson, and he has a younger brother, Jermajesty Jackson, and seven other half-siblings from both his father and his mother.
Born in 1996, Jaafar has already been a performer ever since he was a child. The publication also said that he has been singing since he was 12 years old and has shown incredible talent singing songs from Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke.
In 2019, Jaafar proved that the Jackson blood is still running in his veins as he released his song “Got Me Singing.” He was 13 years old at the time when Michael passed away from cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol intoxication.
“Michael,” the working title for the biopic, will be Jaafar’s acting debut. In an Instagram post, Jaafar expressed his gratitude for bagging the role.
"I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon,” he posted along with a photo of himself practicing at the studio.
