Meghan Markle’s 'Homeless' Brother Condemned Her Charitable Work & Recalled ‘Nightmare’ Of Her Fame

Fights between siblings are incredibly common, but when you're famous, familial problems can, unfortunately, be very public. That's what happened with Meghan Markle and her older half-brother Tom Markle Jr. The siblings share a father, Thomas Markle, who has also had his own share of problems with his daughter.

Back in Feb. 2020, Tom decided to air his grievances to The Sun. At the time, he told the news outlet that he was “sick” of hearing about his sister and Prince Harry’s charitable work when he himself had fallen on hard times.

In the interview with the publication, the then-53-year-old accused the Sussexes of supporting causes that were “in” each week but failed to support their own family. Tom revealed that he had lost jobs and was forced to move in with his mother in New Mexico. He then condemned Meghan and Harry for supporting charities while failing to help their own struggling family.

“Being associated with Meghan has nearly destroyed me,” he told the publication. He added: “I am homeless and could have been under a bridge with a cardboard sign begging for money. But thankfully my Mom has taken me in."

He claimed his life “fell apart” as a result of his Markle surname, and that he'd suffered from depression. “Mentally, this has been a (sic) nightmare ever since Meghan got together with Harry," he said.

Tom, who is a glazier, said the situation had even caused him to consider changing his surname to something else, in order to escape his family's "curse."

He said he is “sick” of hearing about Meghan and Harry’s charitable efforts, and added that they or the Palace ought to have done something to help Meghan’s struggling family.

“For her to sit there on her royal pedestal and watch this happening to her family — she should have done her humanitarian work for us,” he told The Sun. He added:

“I’m sick of hearing about her and Harry helping this charity, that charity — whatever cause is in this week.”

But Tom is not the only member of the Markle family to speak out about tensions in the family. Meghan's father Thomas has been very public about issues he's had with his daughter. This prompted Meghan to write her dad a heartfelt letter asking him to stop speaking to the press, which subsequently went public when British publication The Mail on Sunday, which is part of Associated Newspapers, was accused of releasing the private letter written from Meghan to her father.

This prompted a trial over issues of privacy, which Meghan ultimately won. Nevertheless, Thomas had tried to claim he "had a weighty right to tell his version of what had happened between himself and his daughter including the contents of the letter."

It's thought the publication of the letter happened in response to an article written by People magazine in which an anonymous friend of Meghan’s misrepresented the contents of the letter in question. The article claimed Meghan had written to her father saying "Dad, I'm so heartbroken, I love you, I have one father. Please stop victimizing me through the media so we can repair our relationship."

However, Thomas spoke to the Daily Mail in response to his daughter’s lawsuit and said the letter was presented in a way that "vilified" him. “It was presented as her reaching out and writing a loving letter in the hope of healing the rift, but the letter isn’t like that at all,” Thomas said. “I have the right to defend myself.”
