Meghan Markle's Guidelines For Her British 'Vogue' Cover Shoot Say A Lot About Her

Yesterday it was revealed that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, guest edited the September issue for British Vogue magazine.

Unlike Kate Middleton, who appeared on the cover of the magazine in 2016 and Princess Diana before her, Meghan decided to take a different route.

For the issue, the 37-year-old featured what was described by the @sussexroyal Instagram account as “a diverse selection of women from all walks of life, each driving impact and raising the bar for equality, kindness, justice, and open-mindedness."

Peter Lindbergh, the photographer for the issue, spoke to Vogue about his experience working with Meghan. 

“My instructions from the Duchess were clear: ‘I want to see freckles!’” says Lindbergh, who spoke to her over the phone on the morning of the New York shoot. “Well, that was like running through open doors for me. I love freckles.”

The photographer explained that he loved the idea, as he “hates” make-up and retouching. 

“I hate retouching, I hate make-up. I always say, ‘Take the make-up off!’” he added. “The number of beautiful women who have asked me to lengthen their legs or move their eyes further apart…” he laughed. “You would not believe. It’s a culture of madness.”

The cover featured 15 stars selected by Meghan, each an activist for causes the Duchess cares about or pioneers in their respective industries.

The woman selected for the shoot include model Adwoa Aboah, model Adut Akech, boxer Ramla Ali, the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, writer Sinéad Burke, actress Gemma Chan, actress Laverne Cox, actress Jane Fonda, actress Salma Hayek, dancer Francesca Hayward, actress Jameela Jamil, writer Chimamanda Adichie, actress Yara Shahidi, activist Greta Thunberg, and model Chrissy Turlington.

“Guest Editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring," the Instagram post continued. "To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created."
