Meghan Markle opened up about balancing work and personal life on Apr. 15, 2025, when she released the second episode of her podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder,” featuring a conversation with Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code. This series, announced on Mar. 13, 2025, by the Duchess of Sussex and Lemonada Media, explores her journey of launching her lifestyle brand, the As Ever lifestyle brand, through meaningful discussions with fellow women entrepreneurs.

In an exclusive with PEOPLE, Markle, 43, reflected on the value of these connections. “What’s been meaningful is being able to talk about my own entrepreneurial journey with other female founders who are either on their own trajectory of growth or have IPO’d, sold, or created high-impact brands and gone through all of the learning curves that we all do at the start,” she said.

She continued: “You’re just trying to figure out how to walk, then you want to learn how to run, and then you want to learn how to fly. All of those things take time. There’s also something very exciting and energizing about learning something new as we get older.”

The Duchess of Sussex also spoke candidly about how challenging the path of entrepreneurship can be: “The entrepreneurial journey, for anyone, is a lot, and I’m also really, really lucky that so many of my close friends are female founders that I can glean advice from.”

In the second episode of “Confessions of a Female Founder,” Markle and Saujani, both mothers and working professionals, talked about the constant balancing act of career and home life. For Markle, the topic was particularly timely, as she was caring for two sick children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, while managing her responsibilities.

Markle told Saujani during their conversation: “My kids, for example, right now, one has RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), the other has influenza A.” She added:

“I hear a little pitter-patter of feet upstairs. They’re home from school. ... You know, coughs are up all night and rubbing the back.”

Markle reflected on the importance of showing up fully in every part of her life, even when things aren’t perfect. She praised women who “still find a way to show up for both,” and explained her own mindset.

“Just be honest in the journey of it. And say, ‘Yeah, today, I’m gonna show up for you, but I’m showing up for you in my sweatshirt because I’ve been up all night with my babies,’” she remarked.

She added:

“But I’m still gonna be able to show up for both because both matter and both are what keep my cup full.”

Saujani responded with thoughts on how the pandemic reshaped the working mother experience.

“What was so amazing about (being a working mom) in the pandemic is, I think it gave us a window of what’s possible,” she said. She noted the importance of flexibility – how mothers can “take care of your kid when they’re sick and still get in on a meeting.”

Saujani added:

“If we can actually give people grace and flexibility and give women ownership over their time, you will actually see a shift.”

Both women agreed that being “mom” is their most cherished role. Markle admitted:

“Let me just scroll through pictures of them endlessly on my phone.”

She added:

“It’s the parenting paradigm, where it is so full on, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But I think what’s really key about what you said, and the pandemic may have been the thing that shifted this when working from home and parenting from home where they are completely converged (it) can feel incredibly overwhelming.”
