Meghan Markle And Prince Harry's Oprah Interview Is Nominated For Emmy Award

Jul 14, 2021 by apost team

The controversial decision that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took to step back from their roles as senior working members of the royal family caused quite a stir when it was first announced in March 2020.

Dubbed Megxit, the decision took the general public as well as the royal family by surprise and has since continued to divide the public. Some people believe that their decision was not right, while others wholeheartedly continue to support the couple in their endeavors today. No matter what side of the argument a person might be on, there are certainly a lot of questions about what exactly happened behind closed doors to lead to this decision.

Both Harry and Meghan opened up about the circumstances that led to their decision in a controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. Their frank discussion of the difficulties and challenges they faced have been met with criticism and anger by a large number of people, especially after the death of Prince Philip shortly after the interview aired.

However, that has not stopped Harry and Meghan from continuing to share their experiences and they have been outspoken about their determination to challenge the status quo. Lifetime has released a trailer for a movie that explores the life that Harry and Meghan lived in the UK and the tumultuous years that caused them to leave. Starring Jordan Dean as Harry and Sydney Morton and Meghan, the movie is titled "Harry And Meghan: Escaping The Castle," and the initial trailer had royal fans excited for what was to come.

And now it became known that their Oprah interview has been nominated for an Emmy.

A lot of the struggles that Meghan and Harry faced were touched upon by the couple in early 2021. On March 7, 2021, Meghan and Harry sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that not only touched upon their lives post-Megxit, but also revealed some of the struggles and issues the couples had surrounding Meghan marrying into the family, their son Archie and more. The interview also covered the familiar topic of mental health, harkening back to Harry's mother Princess Diana, who was very outspoken on the topic. Meghan critiqued the British monarchy as an institution, Harry talked about relationship tensions with his father and brother and together the pair discussed personal security. Since the big interview, even more information about Harry's feelings on the royal family has come out.

Harry was the featured guest on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, where he spoke candidly about his experience as being born into the royal family. He described life as a royal as a mix between "'The Truman Show,' and being in a zoo." Harry also revealed that he had previously thought about leaving his royal duties behind, even as early as in his 20s, before he met Meghan. He said the thought of leaving came after he was told to "grin and bear" his problems and just "get on with it."

Harry and Meghan also embarked on a docuseries project for mental health awareness with Oprah Winfrey. The show, "The Me You Can't See," is executive produced by Oprah and Harry and featured the two discussing emotional well-being and mental health with a number of celebrity guests, including Lady Gaga and Glenn Close.

Of course, it is not Harry and Meghan that are nominated for the Emmy Awards. The Emmy Awards go out each year to notable figures and productions within the television business, and as such the people nominated are Oprah Winfrey and the producers of her show, which are Tara Montgomery, Terry Wood, Brian Piotrowicz, Brad Pavone, and Lindsay Flader. They are nominated for the category "Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special," where they will compete with "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman;" "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy;" "United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell," and finally "Vice."

This is actually the 10th Emmy nomination for Winfrey, who has been earning awards and accolades since 1989. She previously took home a trophy in 2000 for the original made-for-TV movie Oprah Winfrey Presents: Tuesdays with Morrie, was awarded the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in 2002, and entered the Hall of Fame as an honouree in 2014. Still, an Emmy nomination is nothing to scoff at. The Emmy Awards are set to air on September 19.

Fans of the royal couple as well as Winfrey were quick to comment and congratulate everybody involved with the interview. One Twitter user comments:

"Beautiful! It’s well deserved! Congratulations to @Oprah and Sussex’s!"

Another wrote:

"Emmy nominations are being announced this morning. Congrats and good luck to Oprah & the Harpo team for the #OprahMeghanHarry interview!"

We're excited to see who will end up taking the coveted prize home later this year.
