Matthew McConaughey Wonders If Woody Harrelson Could Be His Secret Half-Brother

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have done a lot of projects together and enjoyed a successful working relationship for more than two decades. However, McConaughey dropped a bombshell after broaching a theory that his buddy and co-star could be his real-life secret half-brother.

Speaking on the podcast show "Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa," McConaughey confessed that he has always wondered if there was more to this bromance with his "True Detective" co-star ever since his mother, Mary McCabe, hinted she "knew" Charles Harrelson, Woody's dad. McConaughey said that his mother's statement was so loaded that he and Woody tried to dig up their parents' past.

McCabe, a published author and school teacher, married NFL player James McConaughey in the 1950s but went through a divorce two times before the actor was born in 1969. In his memoir "Greenlights," the actor, the third and youngest McConaughey child, wrote that his parents had a troubled relationship and even detailed an incident from his childhood where his mom and dad got violent with each other only to end up making love. The older McConaughey died in 1992 during his intimate time with his mom.

On the other hand, Charles was a contract killer who was in out of prison since the 1960s. Though Woody, who was born in 1961, said he had a good relationship with Charles, his dad wasn't around his life all that much since his parents separated early in their marriage. Charles died in prison in 2007.

McConaughey believed that his mom and Charles might have hooked up during his parents' second divorce when Charles was on furlough. His parents also had trouble conceiving after Michael, their firstborn, so Patrick, their second child, was adopted. This strongly suggested that Charles could be the actor's biological father.

McConaughey went on to explain that he and Woody have been told a number of times how they look similar, especially by their own family members.

"You see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him," the actor told Ripa in the podcast interview

McConaughey first met Woody, then already a TV star, on the set of "EDtv" in 1999, and they did two more projects together: "Surfer, Dude" in 2008 and "True Detective" in 2014. Both men are from Texas and have been inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame within three years of each other.

Though the mystery of their relationship has been hounding him, McConaughey said that he's still unwilling to take a DNA test despite Woody's eagerness. The actor said he's not yet ready.

"It's a little harder for me because he's asking me to take a chance to go, 'Wait a minute, you're trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?' I got a little more skin in the game," McConaughey said.

The news comes as the actors have teamed up anew for another project. The scripted comedy series "Brother From Another Mother," where they will play characters that closely resemble themselves, is currently in the works for Apple Tv+. McConaughey and Woody will not only star in the show but will also serve as executive producers. As of press time, the series' release date has not yet been announced.
