Matthew McConaughey is an American actor that first gained attention in the 1993 comedy "Dazed and Confused." He went on to excel in many other supporting roles in films, including "Angels in the Outfield." His first leading role came in 1996 when he starred in "A Time to Kill." Following this, McConaughey starred in films of many different genres throughout the late '90s, which showed his range as an actor.
One particular genre in which he excelled was romantic comedies. This genre dominated the films he starred in throughout the 2000s. Some of his more popular films were "The Wedding Planner," "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," "Failure to Launch" and "Fool's Gold." Playing a romantic lead so many times established McConaughey as a Hollywood heartthrob.
Starting in 2011 with "The Lincoln Lawyer," McConaughey began appearing in more dramatic films. In 2013 he received critical success playing the role of Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyers Club."
Outside of his impressive career, McConaughey is also a family man. McConaughey and Alves found love with one another shortly after they first met and began building a long-lasting relationship together. The couple got engaged on Dec. 25, 2011, and were later married in a private ceremony on June 9, 2012, in Austin, Texas. They currently reside in the same area. Together they have three children: two sons named Levi and Livingston and one daughter named Vida.
In an Instagram post from February 2023, Alves showed her 1 million followers on the platform the adorable father and son bonding moment that she captured, proving that her husband loves spending mundane yet memorable moments with their children, especially now that they’re growing up.
Like any celebrity parent, parenting methods vary from family to family, culture to culture, and even experience to experience, but McConaughey has a rather firm approach. The actor spoke about raising his kids with Alves during an interview on the TODAY show.
"My wife and I have a similar moral bottom line. When kids try to good cop, bad cop ya, we're on the same page. If they try to play us, we give the same answer. We also have a lot of fun. We can shape them, but they are who they are,” McConaughey said.
As both Alves and McConaughey are in unison with how they want to discipline their children, they also have similar ways of letting their children become their own selves. The kids are allowed to stay awake until the late hours of the night on Fridays but still know right from wrong, thanks to McConaughey's ability to mix steadfast rules into the laid-back feeling that he is famous for.
He told People Magazine. that he is grateful to have three healthy children, and they are very strong in their individuality, which he thinks is attributed to their hereditary link to Alves.
McConaughey said that becoming a father was “really the only thing I ever knew I wanted to be.” If it were up to him, the couple would have “eight more kids.” However, Alves was “not on the same page.”
Any parent who has a family like the McConaugheys would surely love to have more on the team. Thanks to Alves’ great documenting skills, she was able to save her family’s many precious memories on Instagram, which gives them the opportunity to share their joy with many.

Alves’ Instagram account contains photos and memories she's had with her children and husband.
On Jan. 24, 2023, Alves shared a photo of their daughter, Vida, who celebrated her 13th birthday during their family vacation. Actor Woody Harrelson, with whom McConaughey is close friends, was also present on the vacation, and even appeared in the photo Alves shared.
“Uncle @woodyharrelson is questioning if the cake is vegan or not!!! how does this go people! Time flies… 13! You are my ray of sunshine Vida!!! Your name explains everything about you “life” (#tb on celebrating her birthday on our family vacation trip January 3rd),” Alves posted.
But perhaps the most recent family photo Alves captured was when her husband went full barber mode as he cut his youngest son, Livingston’s hair. Livingston, whose hair had already reached his shoulders, was due for a haircut. But instead of taking him to a local barber or the nearest salon, McConaughey decided to take matters into his own hands quite literally. The 53-year-old actor was focused on trying to cut his son’s hair equally, as Levi, his oldest, watched closely to witness what seemed to be a haircut in chaos.
“Oh noooo! Not the dreaded “dad haircut”!!!!” a fan commented in jest.
“We can add hairstylist to Matthew’s résumé! Liv’s expression is so funny!” someone said.
“Will he travel to Nashville to cut hair??! My oldest could use a new hairdo. That’s amazing. What a memory maker,” another wrote.
Fans were quite invested in how the haircut turned out and even asked for finished photos of Livingston with his new 'do.
