Despite being one of America's sweethearts and one of the kindest people in the hospitality world, Stewart has been known to shock people with her adventurous ways and frank words every now and then.

Martha's Early Years

Stewart grew up in New Jersey in the 1940s as Martha Kostyra. In her youth, her mother taught her how to cook and sew. Her father cultivated her interest in gardening.Stewart also learned about the process of canning and preserving while visiting her grandparents in Buffalo, New York. Household Name

While in college, Stewart started dating Andrew Stewart, a recent graduate of Yale Law School. The two got along well and dated before they united in marriage in July 1961. A year later, Stewart finished her studies and graduated with a double major in history and architectural history. A few years later, the couple had their first and only child together, Alexis Stewart, who was born in September 1965.

As the years continued, Stewart became a stockbroker and her husband founded a publishing company. The family moved to Connecticut and her skill set for decorating and home improvement began to shine as she restored a farmhouse.

In the same People interview Stewart voiced, "I was busy. [...] After I gave up stock-brokering, I started an at-home catering business, which was extremely time-consuming."

Her husband hired her company to cater a book release party for a book his company published. At the party, Stewart met the head of the Crown Publishing Group, Alan Mirken, and the two instantly hit it off. Mirken enjoyed Stewart's work as a chef and a hostess so much that he helped her develop her very own cookbook, "Entertaining," which was later released in December 1982.

This was a segue to her releasing a slew of cookbooks in the 1980s. Stewart continued to write articles related to homemaking for various newspapers and magazines.

It also led to her becoming a household name. Her prosperity, home and gardening qualifications and charm was recognized by others that led her to appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Larry King Live."

Stewart and her husband separated in 1987 and in 1990 their divorce was finalized.

In recent years, Stewart has garnered a social media presence with her personal life and her brand.

Where's the Lie Martha?

During the sitdown with DeGeneres, she and others learned Stewart had a few dates with actor Sir Anthony Hopkins, but could not see herself dating him long term. Hopkins played cannibal, Hannibal Lecter in, "The Silence of the Lambs".

During the segment on "The Ellen Show," DeGeneres had to figure out which statement was the lie. DeGeneres learned in the moment that Stewart did stop dating Hopkins because she could not stop thinking of him as Hannibal Lecter when she would be with him.

"I have a big scary house in Maine that's way by itself on 100 acres in the forest," Stewart said during the segment. "I couldn't even imagine taking Anthony Hopkins there."

She said she only could think of him eating brains.

Stewart did not highlight when the two dated, but it is possible that they may have done so in the 1990s when Stewart divorced her husband and Hopkins was not married.

This is not the first time Stewart has discussed Hopkins. She did an episode of "The Meredith Vieira Show," where Stewart said she would not kiss and tell about the situation.

"A girl should kiss and never tell," she said.

The game on DeGeneres' show explained other things about Stewart like how she was struck by lightning three times during her life and that she had done a headstand on the "Ellen Show" in the past. All in all, it's safe to say that Stewart has experienced a lot over her long life and continues to make new and unique memories up until today.
