His most famous role comes from the extremely successful movie franchise, “Star Wars.” Hamill played one of the main characters, Luke Skywalker, in the saga in a number of films and spin-off adaptations. He has found a way to stay successful in his longtime role while taking jobs in other areas, as well as starting a beautiful family, including his son Nathan Hamill. The pair have been able to work alongside each other and have a special bond regarding the “Star Wars” franchise.

Hamill found his love for acting at a pretty young age, and success seemed to come almost as quickly. He seamlessly made his way through roles in television, film and now on the Broadway stage. Hamill continues to strive to keep his career moving forward, excited about the continuous opportunities in front of him. While those roles didn’t always come easily when he was first starting out, Hamill has grown to appreciate the lifelong career he’s been able to maintain.

Nathan had a taste of acting as a baby, but it seemed like he wasn’t bit hard enough by the acting bug to continue with the career until later on in life. With the support of his family, he has been able to navigate through a variety of careers while figuring out what is best for him. Hamill has stood by his son throughout all the changes he’s made in his life, watching him as he continues to flourish.

Hamill was born September 25, 1951, in Oakland, California. Hamill’s father was a United States Navy Captain, so his family was moved around a lot throughout his childhood. His dad got stationed in Japan, leading Hamill to attend school there at Nile C. Kinnick High School. During high school, young Hamill was also a member of the school’s drama club, taking action with his passion for the art. He graduated from high school in 1969, and shortly after enrolled at Los Angeles City College back in California, where he majored in drama.

Hamill got his start as an actor through a recurring role on the popular soap opera “General Hospital.” He appeared in guest roles in a few other shows and television movies. Hamill later auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” catapulting his career. The film, directed by George Lucas, was released in May 1977 and instantly gained unexpected success. It had a huge impact on the film industry, launching a series of follow-up movies in the franchise.

The actor worked on a few projects related to his role, including work as a voice actor for an episode of the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The franchise joined the Disney family when Lucasfilm was acquired by The Walt Disney Company, leading to more films in the popular franchise being made and released. Lucasfilm is an entertainment company founded by Lucas in 1971. The company has released a number of “Star Wars” movies and related projects, as well as other films such as “Labyrinth” and the “Indiana Jones” series.

Lessons From Luke Skywalker

During an interview with Hey U Guys in December 2019, Hamill talked about the film “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and more about his thoughts on his character. He felt like Skywalker was very relatable to a lot of people. “I always thought that it was so smart of George to include a character that was so accessible to young people,” he said. He went on to explain how he thought people felt like they could either be Skywalker or that they would feel comfortable around someone like him. “He was a symbol of optimism,” Hamill said.

“I hope that if there’s any lasting legacy of the character is the idea that you can accomplish anything you want if you believe in yourself, and are selfless and willing to do what’s right for the greater good,” Hamill said. He talked more about the theme of the current film. “Redemption is important, not just in ‘Star Wars,’ but in life. No one’s perfect,” he said

He believed that Skywalker helped people feel more hopeful about moving forward with their own lives, despite having made mistakes in the past. “I think it’s comforting for people, the idea that despite having done wrong… they’re able to right those wrong and be forgiven,” Hamill said. “Actions speak louder than words, and everybody deserves a second chance.”

Hamill talked about what it was like to reprise his role of Skywalker for the 2015 release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” during an interview with Daily Telegraph in November 2017. He was assigned a nutritionist and a personal trainer at the time to get back in shape for the iconic role.

“They called it physical training… which is a euphemism for torture,” Hamill joked about the extreme amount of work it took to get his body ready for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” He also explained more about the diet plan he was on to help with his weight-loss. “No sugar, no dairy, no bread, no fun,” Hamill said.

Hamill talked more about how lucky he was to be able to play such an iconic character, and how grateful he was for everything that came with the role, including the fans and the extensive amount of merchandise. “I love all the gimmicks,” he said. “I love the merchandising. I was the only one that was excited when our faces were masks on the back of cereal boxes.”

The actor made the move from the silver screen to the Broadway stage well after his time with “Star Wars.” He seemed surprised at the amount of his own success, wondering how he was able to create such a huge name for himself. “I always imagined myself driving a cab or waiting a table until I became an actor,” Hamill said, depicting how a number of his colleagues had to work before achieving the same level of fame. He felt like maybe he had done something wrong by his career seemingly moving in the opposite direction of most actors’ paths. “I [had] established a career in television for about six years before I got ‘Star Wars,’ then ‘Star Wars’ happened, then eventually I made it to Broadway,” Hamill explained. “I should have started on Broadway, or off-Broadway in little theatres and so forth.”

Hamill talked more about being on Broadway. “There’s people with their playbills they want to be signed,” he said. “There’s people with lightsabers and action figures. And bubblegum cards!” Hamill was surprised that he was even able to have his own card. “I thought you had to be an athlete to become a bubblegum card,” he explained. “I’m a terrible athlete. Now I’m a bubblegum card. Thank you very much, George Lucas,” Hamill gave a shout-out to the “Star Wars” director who helped him further his career.

Hamill was instantly launched to fame following the success of the first few “Star Wars” films. He tried to avoid type-casting by auditioning for roles in other movie genres, but still worked on projects related to his most popular role. In 1980, he made a guest appearance on “The Muppet Show” as both himself and his character, Skywalker. He also starred in a handful of action, thriller and science fiction movies. Hamill also worked as a voice actor in “Batman: The Animated Series” in 1992 as the Joker. He got to take a break from playing the hero of a series to playing the villain, showcasing more of his abilities. He also worked on a number of follow-up projects related to the role.

During an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Hamill talked more about why he loved getting to play the Joker. “I’m a huge comic book fan, and I knew the calibre of talent they were putting together for the series, because I’m also a huge animation fan,” he explained. “I adore the fact that I’m the voice of The Joker, because 180 degrees removed from this icon of virtue,” he said, talking about how different this character was from Skywalker.

As well as having fun playing the Joker, Hamill expressed how much he enjoyed the work as a voice actor in general. “One of the things I love about voiceovers is it allows you to play characters you’d never get if you were on camera” he said. “And it’s liberating not to be seen. You can make outrageous choices that you wouldn’t make if the camera were this far from your face.”

His creativity became more apparent with the release of his mockumentary “Comic Book: The Movie” in 2004. The movie featured an exaggerated version of Hamill, being about a comic book fan who attended conventions before becoming famous. Another way he showed his creativity was through writing a graphic novel called “The Black Pearl.”  The five-part comic book miniseries was published by Dark Horse Comics in 1966. The comic follows the story about a troubled man named Luther who accidentally becomes a hero through his work as a vigilante.

Hamill was nominated for a list of accolades throughout his career, winning a handful of awards. He won Best Actor at the Saturn Awards in the years 1981, 1984 and 2018 for his role as Skywalker in the various “Star Wars” films. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018 for all his work in motion pictures. On top of that, he found love and started a family. Hamill married dental hygienist Marilou York on December 17, 1978. The couple had a private civil ceremony, and later had three children together, named Nathan, Griffin and Chelsea.

Hamill’s son Nathan has definitely come into his own. He was born June 25, 1979, while Hamill was filming “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” Hamill explained the ordeal in a tweet in June 2019. Since Hamill didn’t want to miss the birth of his first child, he was given the day off. He was called back in to work just nine hours after Nathan was born to film one shot. Hamill revealed that he also sprained his thumb on-set that same day.

He is currently an artist who creates a variety of things in many different styles, including toys, illustrations and other designs. According to Nathan’s website, he grew up with a plenitud of movies and cartoons to watch, comics to read and toys to play with. This helped shape the personality and artist abilities he has today. Nathan has “an affinity for large-eyed creatures, ranging from cute to macabre, bashful to bellicose,” according to his site. People are able to view an online gallery of his collection and even buy some of the fun things he has created.

Along with his own work, Nathan has also illustrated sketch cards for a “Star Wars Galaxy” trading card set. The main bulk of his work is currently being put to use on the television series “Weasel Town,” where Nathan serves as an actor, designer and musical composer. His acting roles are limited, but he has been seen in some pretty famous movies. Nathan had an uncredited role in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” in which his father had a leading role. He has also appeared in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” as a film extra.

Bonding Over ‘Star Wars’

During an interview with Collider Podcasts in June 2019, Nathan talked more about his roles in the “Star Wars” movie, as well as his relationship with director  Lucas. “I see him occasionally at events, but we’re both shy so we don’t say hi to each other,” Nathan revealed about interacting with Lucas. He reminisced about an encounter with Lucas while going to the set of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” in the summer of 1997, where he showed the director his sketch of the beloved character Yoda. Lucas, being pretty mild-mannered in general, simply replied,”pretty good,” according to Nathan.

Nathan came up with a name for his character while having lunch with the editors of “Stars Wars: The Phantom Menace.” He explained how his character wasn’t supposed to be cannon to the film, but there was a character with the same last name that was critical to the movie’s lore. The name he came up with was Rehtul Minnau. The first name is Luther spelled backwards, taking inspiration from one of the characters in his father’s graphic novel, “Black Pearl.” The last name was a reference to the show “Gilligan’s Island.” “[It] is a reference to the anchor head cap in the deleted scenes, so we went real deep,” Nathan explained about the choice of the name.

Nathan may not have starred in as many “Star Wars” films as his father, but he has definitely created a great career for himself in a multitude of ways. Not only has he been seen on the big screen, but his work as an artist and his great connections in the industry have helped him make a name for himself.
