Margot Robbie Settled Her Mother’s Mortgage As Soon As She Could After Breaking Into Hollywood

Margot Robbie has risen to become one of Hollywood’s most talented and sought-after actresses. Born on July 2, 1990, in Dalby, Queensland, Australia, Robbie’s journey toward stardom began in a humble setting. Raised by her single mother, Sarie Kessler, she developed a love for acting in her younger years. Her determination and passion led her to relocate to Melbourne, where she juggled part-time jobs while attending auditions.

The breakthrough came when Robbie secured a role in the Australian soap opera “Neighbours” in 2008. The show’s popularity allowed Robbie to gain recognition within the country and served as a stepping stone for her future success. However, it was clear that she was destined for bigger things, and she set her sights on conquering the international stage.

In 2011, Margot made the life-changing decision to move to the United States. Despite the initial challenges of starting afresh in a foreign land, her determination remained unwavering. Despite her meteoric rise to fame, Robbie has remained down-to-earth and approachable, maintaining a strong connection to her Australian roots. In a 2019 Vogue interview, her mother recalled how taken aback she was by Robbie’s staunch determination to pursue acting.

“I remember the first time you told me you were going to be an actor in grade 12… my jaw hit the floor because you were at a really good school. You come from a family with a medical background and a family with a business background, and you told me you were going to be an actor. I was stunned,” Kessler said.

Kessler recounted that she initially thought it would be hard for Robbie to “be an actor and make a good living.” 

“I was very concerned you were intending to take a pathway that, to me, didn’t have a really extensive future. And now you could say: ‘Mom, you needed more faith in what I can achieve,’” Kessler conceded.

The proud mom also praised Robbie for setting up her own production company, as it would give her “longevity.”

In the same interview, Kessler recalled the difficulties their family faced as Robbie was growing up:

“Being in a big family, too – with two brothers and a sister and yourself – we had to figure things out and work through the difficulties of having tight budgets.”

Among Kessler’s difficulties was ensuring her daughter had all the support she needed to achieve her dreams. This included taking money out from the house mortgage to lend to young Robbie when she needed it most. Robbie later recalled that she had vowed to pay her mother back when she was able and was happy when that day came.

“Everything I owed my mom, I had it written down. She’d take money out of the, like, house mortgage (to) lend me money. So I always knew, I was like, ‘I gotta pay that back,’” Robbie told CBS Sunday Morning.

“And then one day, when I made enough money, I just paid that whole mortgage off completely. I was like, ‘Mom, don’t even worry about that mortgage anymore. It doesn’t even exist anymore,’” she added.

However, Robbie doesn’t see her actions as anything extraordinary at all and said:

“Honestly, anyone in my position, you’d do that for your mom. Of course you would.”

Robbie also confessed that she “kept the piece of paper” as it was “so satisfying at the end to know I’d paid it all back.” 

Robbie also told CBS Sunday Morning that she has never taken the success she’s achieved for granted. She said:

“I know I’m hardworking and blah, blah, blah, but I’m also the luckiest, luckiest, luckiest person in the world. Every time that I did something, I was like, ‘Now it’s the top. It will never get better than this.’ And then somehow it’s just kept getting better and better.”
