Many People Use The 'Shopping Cart Test' In Order To Determine If Someone Is Good

How can you tell if someone is a good person? There are a number of reasons why someone could be considered a good person. For instance, they could be extremely kind, selfless, generous or loyal. While there is not one characteristic in particular that defines someone as a good person, there are a few ways to tell if someone is respectful to others. The main way that many people have agreed upon to really see if someone is a good person is the shopping cart test.
The shopping cart test is the test to see what people do with their shopping cart once they are finished shopping and loading up their car. If you return your cart to the carousel or designated cart collection area, you are considered good. If you do not, you may not be seen in the best light.
There are a few instances when returning the shopping cart is not possible, since everyone’s lives are different, meaning this test isn’t absolute. However, for those who are fully capable of returning their carts and choose to do so, they are typically considered to be good people in regards to this theory.
This litmus test was mentioned on Twitter back in May 2020, and it has since gone viral, leading many people to share their personal beliefs on the matter. While many have agreed that returning the cart is an easy task and only selfish people wouldn’t return it, others have pointed out that the situation is not so black and white for everyone, as some people may have personal struggles they’re dealing with.
The Twitter user behind the viral tweet has since made their account private, but many people are still discussing their view on the shopping cart test. The tweet simply posed the question asking if you would return a shopping cart to the collection area if nobody was watching, as per the Daily Mail. The tweet also stated that there were no “dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart,” and that the test was a simple way to determine if you were a good or bad member of society.
On a popular message board, the shopping cart test has been referred to as “the ultimate litmus test for whether a person is capable of self-governing,” as per the Daily Mail. The post also said, “To return the shopping cart is objectively right. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart.” Many people agreed that returning the cart was a simple task, and if you didn’t return it, you were inconsiderate. However, others argued that the situation wasn’t so black and white, since not everyone is capable of returning their cart.
“What if you have small children that you can’t leave unattended in a car?” one Twitter user wrote. Other users mentioned that some people with disabilities might struggle to return their cart by themselves. “This assumes everyone has the ability to put back the cart, which is not true for disabled people who overestimated their ability or have a sudden onset of symptoms, like an anxiety or asthma attack,” another user wrote.
The shopping cart test has continued to be debated regarding what it really means if a person is able to return their cart, and if they choose to do so.
