TikTok has the highest growth rate and is one of the world's most popular social media apps. The app, created in 2016, has 1 billion users and is just behind Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. TikTok, as with other social media platforms, is loaded with influencers who share hacks on how to get things done easily, faster, cheaper, better, etc. There are DIY hacks on practically everything, and influencers often have a field day with the "awws" and "oohs" of their amazed audience. Unsurprisingly, many also try to build a large followership with incredible stunts, talents, and hacks.

Mason and Mai are a frugal couple with a joint account on TikTok. The account @savingforboba is popular for its hacks on how to save money or get stuff for free. While most of their content is funny to their followers, Mason has sometimes irked fans who think his penny-pinching tricks may sometimes be extreme. In one case, he tried to exploit a free drink refill system at a major food chain by picking up a cup in the waste bin. The controversial clip brought much negative criticism, but it doesn't look like the Tiktoker is ready to change his ways.

Recently, the Tiktokers went viral again for their money-saving tips. A video posted on May 22, 2023, showed Mason at the store peeling a banana before placing it on the scale to weigh it because he wanted it to be lighter. While some thought the idea to be genius, it annoyed others who disagreed with his methods and even encouraged his girlfriend to leave him. Keep reading to get the details of the incident and followers' comments on the hack.

An Australian TikToker, Mason, left his audience divided after he shared his money-saving tip on fruits. In his video, posted on May 22, 2023, with over 800,000 views, Mason peeled a banana before putting it in a plastic bag which he placed on a scale.

"how my frugal boyfriend saves money on his bananas," the video text overlay read while the post's caption read, "the secondhand embarrassment tho."

Mason's trick impressed a segment of their followers; some even said they would do the same under certain circumstances.

"I would if I was gonna eat it after I leave," a user commented."

Another follower wrote, "Dude will have more money than all of us. Very smart man." When another user argued that he would barely save anything from bananas, the follower added, "it's not the 20 cents per banana, it's the mindset he applied to all purchases."

Meanwhile, most of the TikTokers who commented contended that Mason was a penny-pincher and not frugal. One even joked that he needed to be locked up for his methods.

"Break up with him and call the cops," one critic advised Mai

Another user told Mai:

"Save yourself the pain and suffering now. Leave him."

A third user sarcastically wrote:

"Tell him to just weigh it without the bag too at this point 😭."

The clip also made it to Sky New Australia on YouTube. However, more people found the clip funny and ingenious than those on TikTok. A user shared a similar story, having wrote

"My granny used to get the butcher to cut off all the fat of the joint before he weighed it. But then to rub salt in, she would ask for some fat to roast the meat in because she knew off cuts of fat were free."
