Marriage can be hard; ask any married couple. And nothing is harder than seeing the person you love affected by a serious illness.
Unfortunately, this is the case for Carl and Laura Gilbertson, of Liverpool England. But what Carl had in store for his bride on their ten year anniversary in 2016 is a perfect tear-jerking example of how love knows no bounds.
A Little Help From the Choir
Carl recruited the help of the choir from the Liverpool Media Academy for this special day. Under the pretense that they were only going to meet their parents at a shopping center, the couple arrived. Within minutes, the flash mob of choir students was breaking out into song.
It wasn’t just any song, either. It was “Just the Way You Are”, by Bruno Mars. Nothing could have communicated Carl’s devotion to his wife better than those words, and as soon as the song kicked off, Laura burst into tears.

A Hard Diagnoses
Laura was aware of her MS diagnosis long before she met Carl, but it was fairly inactive back then, and she didn’t even mention it to him until later on.
Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It can disrupt the communication between the brain and other parts of the body. It can be asymptomatic, or sometimes leave the person afflicted completely disabled. In Laura’s case, while she and Carl were dating, she had relapses but always managed to quickly recover and bounce back to normal.
Shortly after their honeymoon, however, Laura relapsed and was left disabled. She had to make the difficult decision to retire, and was bound to a wheelchair.
Unwavering Love
When asked about the flash mob, Carl told the Today Show that he chose this Bruno Mars song because he wanted Laura to know that, “…I love her just as she is and that to me she’s perfect.”
As the choir belts out the song, Laura is overtaken with emotion and weeps throughout the entire performance. The waterworks are contagious, as the audience that is surrounding the couple has trouble holding back tears as well.
Carl affectionately holds his precious wife’s hand throughout the performance, occasionally comforting her and giving her kisses. He has demonstrated the truest form of love and devotion with this beautiful display of support.
There is truth behind the saying “love conquers all”. Carl has shown us that no matter how difficult things get, and no matter how drastically situations change, love has the ability to hold everything together.
