Man Grieving Loss Of Dog Goes To Shelter — Rescues All The Overlooked Senior Animals

As any pet owner knows, the bond between man and animal is one that cannot be underestimated. Pets act as our closest friends in times of need; they are there for us in good times, as well as in bad times, and all too often, they are abandoned and left for the worst in animal shelters.

Steve Greig from Colorado decided to go and adopt dogs from an animal shelter after going through the hardship of losing his dog. Before he knew it, one dog turned into many others, including other animals aside from dogs.

When his beloved furry companion passed, Steve Greig, a Colorado native, felt an emptiness inside of him that he simply could not bear to live with. Without really giving it too much thought, he found himself outside of his local animal shelter. According to The Dodo, Greig explained:

“I was just so distraught…A month or two went by, and I still felt so horrible about it. I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened.”

The next thing Greig knew, he had brought home Eeyore, a then 12-year-old Chihuahua with a slew of health problems and a heart of gold. Eeyore lived with Greig until he was 19 years old before crossing the rainbow bridge earlier in March, as Greig announced in an Instagram post.

And Eeyore was just the beginning. Before long, Greig knew, his house had become home to eight more unwanted senior canines, as well as a pup his sister couldn’t take care of any longer, and a dog belonging to a friend. He also found himself surrounded by a swarm of chickens, ducks, cats, a pig named Bikini, and a school of fish.

It’s a lot of work for Greig, who also works as an accountant. He has to care for their unique dietary needs, keep them exercised, keep up with their grooming, and make sure they’re all living life to the fullest. Greig doesn’t seem to mind; he explained to TODAY

"It was so immediately healing that I knew this is just what I was supposed to do...It’s just incredibly rewarding."

The senior citizens he’s welcomed into his home certainly know who they are and know how fortunate they are to have been rescued by Greig.

Greg updates the public on his rescued bunch, including a turkey named Tofu, on his Instagram page. He also published a children's book called 'The One and Only Wolfgang: From Pet Rescue to One Big Happy Family' which both introduces the current family of different adopted animals, as well as pays homage to Greg's original beloved dog, Wolfgang.
