Man Discovers 1 Million Pennies During Clean-Out Of His Father-In-Law's Home

Imagine doing a clean-up at your home, and you find coins from different corners of the living room. You must feel very lucky, right? However, no one can match the fortune of a realtor who found a whopping 1 million pennies while doing a thorough cleaning job at their own house. Now that’s a lot of money!

According to KTLAJohn Reyes, a realtor from California, made a shocking discovery in June 2023 when he and his wife Elizabeth were cleaning the house of his father-in-law named Fritz, in a neighborhood in Los Angeles.

The property was reportedly built in the 1900s, and it was said to be a former bed and breakfast during its first years.

The original owner and his brother immigrated to the city and lived in the house for a long time until Fritz died and his sibling moved to a different household.

Since then, the house had been vacated, and some of the members of Reyes' wife’s family had been doing their best to clean the once-beloved property as they are planning to renovate it for the generations to come.

Speaking about how he felt while cleaning the house, it appears that it was no easy task because Reyes explained that there were a lot of hard-to-reach spaces in the basement, which were only accessible if they crawled in.

Little did they know that their hard work would pay off as they finally discovered bags over bags of pennies which totaled up to 1 million coins, or worth around $10,000.

Recalling the day when they found the fortune, Reyes said they first saw some loose pennies until they saw boxes, crates, then, eventually, bank bags.

Despite the thrilling discovery, the family faced a problem: they had a hard time figuring out what to do with the coins.

At first, they thought they could cash it in and call it a day, but they realized that they didn’t want to pay 8% to Coinstar, and they couldn’t take all of the bank bags from Los Angeles to Ontario.

In an effort to get rid of the pennies they discovered, they tried to get in contact with banks around the city, but a Wells Fargo branch refused their offer as it was too much.

Recalling his conversation with an employee of the bank, Reyes said the manager told him, “‘I don’t even have the room in my vault. Don’t bring them here.'”

The family’s second plan was to try cashing the coins at a local bank in San Bernardino County so they get to work quickly.

Their next task was also stressful as they literally had to take the bags one-by-one from the basement, “up the stairs, and into the trucks,” which took them a whole day.

With over two trucks and hours of driving, they finally made it to the local bank, but unfortunately, the establishment didn’t want to take the pennies either.

Since they didn’t have a choice anymore and had already worked months trying to figure out what to do with the coins, Reyes decided to list the pennies on a resale app, and website called OfferUp for the price of $25,000 as there could be some unique or rare coins that could be worth more.
