Losing a loved one is extremely hard. It can be hard to live in a world that they no longer exist in. It can be very difficult to find a method or new purpose of paying tribute to them, but it can be very beneficial to helping yourself move on and recover from the grief.
When Hilton Patton, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, lost his brother, Boston, to suicide, he didn’t know if he could heal from this pain he felt. After he discovered he would be inheriting his brother’s two Bengal cats, he gained the incentive to start a project that would honor Boston. He put his grief aside and began his project. Bengal cats are very active and smart cats. They have a sleek physique and a very unique spotted fur.
They look a lot like tiny leopards that can live inside your house! Hilton knew this and decided to transform his basement into a cat jungle in honor of his brother and his pets. When he adopted Boston’s two cats, he wanted to give them a fun area to play in that would make his brother proud. He said he knew it was most likely going to look amateur. He knew that going into the project.

Hilton stated he didn’t have any experience. But he knew he had to try and do something awesome for his younger brother and his cats. Bengal cats are very active and smart cats. He is still in pain from losing his brother to suicide on February 3rd, 2018. He wants his brother to know how much he misses him and loves him. Hilton stated he had spent all of his money in order to buy supplies for this project. He used professionals to do the carpet installation but did everything else he could on his own with the exception of the electrical wiring in which he got help from a friend.
When he got started, his basement didn’t even have walls. He got to work getting the room wired for lights and sound, installed some Sheetrock, and built the best cat jungle a jungle cat could ask for. The previously unfinished basement was transformed into two different rooms with a water feature, carpeted walls and shelves, fiber optic lighting, and many different playthings and different hiding spaces for the curious creatures.
When it was all done, the room came alive with jungle sounds coming through the hidden speakers, a blue sky filled with fiber optic lights that formed into a tribute to his brother Boston. It even had the soft whisper of the water in a fountain. Hilton tried to recreate a picture of his brother he knew he loved.
When the cat jungle was finished, it was beyond incredible. Both the cats, Benji and Nala were right at home when they moved into their new home. Nala loved climbing the walls like the true jungle cat she is!
Hilton shared pictures of the cat jungle on Imgur and the post soon went viral. People wanted to help him finish his tribute to his brother. Someone set up a GoFundMe, and Hilton has plans to use the money to add an outside jungle for them with an indoor tunnel system. He promised to spend every single dime he got on Boston’s cats.
To Hilton, this wasn’t just a fun project for him and his cats. It was a loving tribute to the brother he had lost way too soon. We hope that his hard work in some way helped him heal from his loss. We know Boston is looking down on his brother and smiling at the jungle palace he built for his cats.
