It's been over three decades since a young Macaulay Culkin played the role of the mischievous Kevin McAllister, who outsmarted burglars in "Home Alone."
The McAllister house in Winnetka, Illinois, where the film was shot, became a pop-culture attraction that has drawn thousands of visitors every year.
And in an unexpected twist, Macaulay, who portrayed Kevin, revealed that he considered purchasing the legendary house when it hit the market for $5.25 million in May 2024.
At 44, Macaulay moved away from the Hollywood spotlight in his teen years but has since returned to acting, albeit focusing on smaller creative projects, as well as his personal life. Despite his early fame, he's maintained a low profile in recent decades, embracing his independence, new ventures and his role as a father. The actor is engaged to Brenda Song, better known as London Tipton from Disney's "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody." Together, they share two sons, Dakota, 3, and a 2-year-old whose name has been kept private.
According to the New York Times, the actor made the house-buying statement at a movie screening of "Home Alone" at the Rosemont Theater on Dec. 6, 2024. The screening was a part of the actor's multi-city tour, "A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin," during which Macaulay took the time to reflect on his career, hold a Q&A and share memories with his loyal fans.
Macaulay stated: "I had half a mind to buy it — just for giggles," and then added that he wanted to turn the house into a "movie fun house" where people could partake in all the fun things Kevin did in the movie, like sliding down the stairs.
When asked why he didn't go through with the sale, Macaulay joked: "I got kids. I'm busy, man."
In a December 2024 interview with E! News, the star revealed that his children are fans of "Home Alone," with his 3-year-old son hilariously believing he is Kevin and thinking some of Kevin's memories are his own.
Macaulay revealed he asked his son, "Do you remember going down the stairs on the sled?" To which Dakota replied, "Mmhmm, yep. Sure do." Macaulay then followed up with, "Do you remember when he had yellow hair?" to which his son nodded, confirming, "I do."
Macaulay's son, Dakota, even believes he once battled the movie's infamous burglars, Marv and Harry. Dakota proudly told his dad that he "fought the burglars," and Macaulay teased his child:
"'You're a lying liar who lies. That was me!'"
Although Macaulay's kids love "Home Alone," they sometimes struggle to follow the story, prompting their dad to step in and guide them. The actor explained:
"They can't really follow the storyline, so I kind of told them the story as it goes."
They also can't recognize their dad as the child actor. However, Macaulay understands why they struggle to make the correlation. He said: "I'm a lot taller now. I have a lot more body hair."
On the other hand, Macaulay's brother, Kieran Culkin, who also appeared in "Home Alone," revealed that his children haven't seen the movie yet. Kieran, 42, thinks some parts might be too frightening for his young kids — Kinsey, 5, and Wilder, 3. He explained that there are scary parts in the movie.
He continued: "For the 3-year-old, there's the tarantula (and) there's the guy at the end who said, 'I'm gonna bite off all your fingers.' That's scary for a 3-year-old."
Kieran said he hopes this will be the year his children are finally "ready" to watch "Home Alone."
As for Macaulay, he's come to embrace the film's seasonal charm, admitting:
"I'm kind of embracing it and, at the same time, taking the p*ss out of it, too." He added: "It's more fun to embrace it than to fight it."
